Later model shock for 08 650

I am sniffing around looking for ways to improve the suspension on my 08 FE 650. I've done all the searching and been impressed with the way bushmechanic just makes it happen. Forums are so useful with people like that around that are knowledgeable, innovative and patient with the morons like me. The way he conducts himself impresses me greatly. However; I'm no Bushmechanic.

I need to look for solutions a bit closer to plug and play. The one thing I can't quite get a handle on is the suitability for later model shocks to go in the 08. Eg 2011+ KTM or Husaberg WP PDS shocks. Or any other brand for that matter. I understand the clevis' can be different and the valving may/will need to be changed. What I was wanting to know is the length and fit otherwise a problem with a later shock?

I apologise if I missed something in my searching.

No sure?
But I can measure mine up when I get it back and let you know all the dimensions.

My brain just started to work again. In amongst all that stuff from Bushmechanic there was a reference to the shock from the later KTM 85sx. I'll sniff down that trail a bit?

Hi Guzzi

im using a 2010 KTM 450SX shock in one bike and an ohlins ttx KTM shock in the other

top mount is the same, bottom mount is not.

lower clevis needs to be changed, can use a berg lower clevis as a direct swap on the KTM big bike shocks

the ohlins needs a new lower clevis fabricated or modify the ohlins ktm one like i did however as you wrote, the ktm 85 sx lower clevis does fit in the swingarm, just needs a little collar made to fit inside the lower clevis.

the 85 shock is better than the big bike ktm shocks as it has a 1 1/2 piston design like ohlins instead of the 2 pistons in the ktm shock

in all ktm shocks there is a small issue of the reservoir occasionally touching the rear wheel guard .. not a big problem but need to be aware of it.

FWIW the later model KTM shocks up to about 2012 are almost the same internally as the 08 berg shock so if you are looking to improve on it you need the Ohlins

memeber gokai has had it done "profesionally" so may be useful to ask him details of which ohlins lower clevis they used, probably the 85 sx

good luck
