has anyone put a bigger tank on...clark mfg 4 gal...going onto a '03 fe501.....the xtra weight throw off the handling or make it too top heavy etc...also what type of sealant is best for the top rocker arm cover..(motor top)..seems to leak quite a bit...thanks much

is the rocker cover a common prob with this model,,,i bought the bike new as a leftover in 06 dont have alot of hrs on it...and it leaked pretty bad also the fork seals are already done...less than 20 hrs

With diligence you can get a better seal than the factory. I have close to 150 hours on my 05 and the fork seals are still good. Luck of the draw I suppose.

There is sure nothing wrong with three bond, if you use it correctly. The stuff has been around forever. The problem, especially in four strokes, is that it is applied in excess and tend to plug up screens, lines, and oil jets.

I prefer Loctite 515 or 518, which is a non hardening anerobic sealer, designed for metal to metal sealing. The excess will not harden and will not cause any issues like three bond can. It still should be used sparingly. A super thin coat on one surface will do it.

It's also the factory recommended sealant for the KTM RFS motor.

may i suggest you take an alternative view and go for the FCR39MX carb. they can be leaned right down and i got just under 4 hours from mine in the woods three winters ago - racing!

it's a lot harder to lean off the dell orto.

thanks for the help....love the bike but it seems a litle higher maint than i am used to.one more item...does the spark arrester from a ktm fit the husa

bob

lets be straight here. you're all over the shop. you say thanks for the help but at no point do you interact with people or what they are saying.

you ask about a larger tank so you talk about the friggin tappets, so we are still answering the tappets and the fuel consumption problem and you talk about a spark arrestort and how the bike (in other words) is too much for you to cope with?

you don't strike me as a particularly bright person if you reckon the husaberg is higher maintenance than other bikes.

given that any bike 5 years (ooops! make that 6!) needs work, i guess that can be on a; Fi DOHC, bucket and shim with TPS, EXUP blah! bah! blah! bike but no it's on a simple OHC screw and locknut tappet - husaberg.

my father would have called you a pisser! make your mind up what the hell you want and try and interract with people a bit better. they are giving of their time and effort to supply you with valid informaion so try and value it a bit better.

i don't care that you don't lke my opinion. we have literally hundreds of "marines" that storm UHE and phuq off a fortnight later and losing another one won't worry us or me.

pull the rather large stick out of your *** and get over yourself...i asked two simple questions about a bike i know little about...the maint remark is in part due to the fact that my other dirtbike is a xr400 which needs little maint.....and i know all about the lraning of the carb....since i ride between desert and mountians....500' to 7000'...not such a good idea...and since owning the bike i bought as a leftover in 06 and have only 20hrs on it has had the flywheel worked on along with fork seals gone bad...broke kickstand....a battery and starter and leaks oil like an old triumph....i also have 5 other bikes that i ride and maintain so i am sort of bright about some things...so if your time is that important that you cant take the two minutes it must have took to typ your reply...then dont...thats pretty simple....and its not that i do or do not like your opinion....i just dont give a phuq...have a nice day..and blow me

Boys, boys, boys, what's with all the hostilities ? Can't we all just get along ? Group hug ? To be honest bob you are bouncing around a bit. The big tank on the berg doesn't change the handling any more than a big tank on an XR400.If you can thrash the XR and throw it around you won't notice the weight of the big tank on the berg. Even if it is new you have a three year old bike there, sitting in the shop, gaskets, seals and sealant on any bike are going to dry out. I would think that a good dealer would have reccomended that you check and grease all berings and fittings and let you know that some of the seals could fail due to lack of use. The fly wheel situation was dealt with in a factory bulliten and should have been known to your dealer. Where did the kickstand break ? There also are silicon gaskets avalaible for the rocker covers which I use with no problems. All better now ?

yes..thank you...and my tank(xr) gets top heavy with the large tank om it....which is not much fun in the mountians..and the silicon gasket you refer to ...is that for the tappet covers or the larger top of the head which i thought they called the rocker cover...and the bike wasnt bought from a dealer...so i had to do all the assembly ans fluids myself...seals were a factory defect...kickstand broke rite at the bolt mount on the weld and has since been fixed...cant recall the flywheel...like the bike still or i wouldnt bother...and sorry about the jumping around...thanks again

ron may have made a mistake or been unclear thee. the rocker cover is a straight silicon sealant jobbie. the inspection caps may have these silicon gaskets.

the best sealant is

wurth sebasto RTV supoer silicon sealant. tried 3-bond and nothing comes near this stuff that i have tried so far.

get a keihin and set it up properly. you'll get 3.5 hours out of a tankful.

will try rtv on the rocker...think i may go with a larger tank..less trouble then re carbing...thanks for the info...by the way a fmf pipe from a yzf is the same end as the husa

Silicon gaskets are for the valve covers. I have stock and large tanks set up with petcocks and fuel lines and just switch back and forth depending on the ride vs. gas (fuel station) situation. Properly set up your three year old bike will smoke new ones and you have something unique. Makes people wonder just what was that blue and yellow strek that went flying by

stafford9611...yes it is approved by usfs...when i see the bike i will try to get a part # off the tip
stoveguy...did the bigger tank make the bike top heavy...i take it it is the clark tank also

I think the large tank makes the bike handle a little top heavy(colo mountains), but manageable. A properly jetted fcr gets very decent fuel economy. Take Taffy's advice, he knows his chit.

Yes Clarke (only one around for 2000-08) Top heavy doesn't really come to mind, but I out weight the bike @ 275 lbs no gear, so it pretty much goes where I want it to. Plus it seems to me that with the rad shrouds being used to carry fuel some of the weight gain is carried lower to the ground aleviating to some extent the top heavy feel

i have looked into the carb but at $500 it seems a little pricey...the tank is about 200 which would seem to make a lil more cents...
