Hey all,
I just thought I would let you know one of our local SM series had their opening round this weekend, and Robert Loire and I decided to head down to the heart of Flattrack country, Springfield, IL, to get some more spring riding in on the Loire Racing Aero P.A Husabergs.
We couldn't have asked for better weather for the race (75 deg & partly cloudy), but rains the week prior to the race meant pavement only, no dirt. The great weather brought out an interesting mix of 13 riders in the Open Expert class, including about 4 or 5 AMA Pro riders and 3 or 4 top local flat-track experts (running TT set-ups with stock brakes and 19" wheels 8O ).
When the races got underway, Robert renewed his battle with one of Southern Illinois' best Nick Daniels. Whether it is at an AMA Pro race, or a local kart track these two seem to find each other and have some really good clean races. In the end Robert took the win in the Open Expert main, while Nick edged him out in the Dash for Cash.
For my first ride since November, I had a great time and rode pretty good to take 4th in the Open Expert main and 5th in the Dash. I seemed to be stuck to Chase Guthrie the entire day as neither of us could gain much of an advantage on the other. I could alway push my 650 past his Kawi 450 down the back straight, but couldn't always hold the inside line through the final turn and he would get me back.
In between us and the lead pair was a kid Vance (something) riding a Honda with a TT set-up. This guy has some serious skill on a bike. I am still not sure how he kept it on the track as the bike was bucking him back and forth coming into every corner, and he had the stock front brake!
All-in-all it was another great day of riding (really are there any bad days riding?), and the Husabergs ran great. Next up for the team, Robert and Mike Bergman will be heading out to Nevada for the Stateline Supermoto race in Primm April 13-15th. Meanwhile, if there are any other midwestern guys interested in checking out the SM scene a little more, I will be helping put on a track day at a facility in Norway, IL (~1.5 hrs SW of Chicago) also on April 15th.
Regards,
Colin Horn
