Our club put this race on. The reason given to the press was "ignition failure". Whatever happened cost Lafferty the overall as he was ahead up to that point and flying.
He pushed (!) his bike a looong way up a riverbed full of deep sand with the engine running. It would not pull him at all under a load. He was pissed, obviously. His mechanic met him at the end of the riverbed at a dirt road, and it was not pretty. Tension and disappointment was evident enough to cut it with a knife. On the dirt road, the bike had barely enough power for Lafferty to ride it back to the riders camp. The bike would not rev up and pull him at all.
Conditions were absolutely brutal. Record hot temperatures approaching 100 degrees and zero moisture. NEPG had us reduce the final long course test by 6 miles because of rider safety concerns. This was a good call as we had a few minor heat-related incidents with riders. Today is is 30 degrees cooler, go figure.
