So here’s the $6,000 to $13,000 CAD question…

As a second bike (I own a 12GS for my trips, passenger accommodations, camping trips) I’ve been looking for a sport bike/super moto to fill the sport bike void while keeping the insurance realistic.

The choices are the DRZ400SM and the Husaberg 650e. I mean no disservice to anyone who owns a ‘burg by comparing the two because I’m not. This isn’t a DRZ v 650e post because it’s fairly obvious which would win.

What I’m looking for is some specific info regarding both models on things that a search has not revealed or answered well enough for my purposes.

Specifically, the DRZ, since I can’t get a demo ride anywhere;

Is the hp enough for guys used to sport bikes with 100 hp? My last track day bike was a CBR600RR and while I don’t expect it to come close I’m curious if you guys/gals find it still fun enough to ride with the stock power plant or @ best the 1st stage of tune.
Have you used it @ the track and found it good enough not to go to something like a ‘burg for the extra hp/performance.
Excluding the hp hop-up do you find the spec of the stock DRZ components, specifically the suspension and rims, up to snuff that it does not require you changing anything?

Related to the ‘burg, I’m looking at a ’05 street legal 650e brand new. I’ve read of the increased reliability. The intensive maintenance of this bike does not dissuade me in any way. What I’m looking for is where you use it and information beyond basic maintenance issues.

Are you 650e owners only using it on the track only or are you using it on the street? I’d do probably 3-4 trackdays but it would be my alternative ride on the weekends. Probably a weekly ride of about 300 km with maintenance on a bi-weekly basis. No super slab but about a 40 min to 1 hour ride on back roads to the twisties.
Have any of you needed to rebuild your ‘burg? If so, why? Expense? Frequency? Time factor and ease of rebuild?
Price of the parts? I’m wondering what is the most expensive?
Time to delivery of parts. The dealer says about a week or two. What do you say?
Any additional info is appreciated.

I’ll be honest the Husaberg is #1 in my books. After the demo I cannot think of a bike that has been this fun in years. The 950, ZX10R, R12GS, 640 ADV all rock IMO but this was raw and uninhibited. I felt I was getting away with something. Once I saw the insurance rates on the DRZ and 650e I know I will be. I’m willing to treat it like owning a 2 stroke in that it is maintenance intensive but will be a hell of a ride, like the RD/RZ series of old. But if the DRZ is remotely close in terms of fun factor with reasonable mods, say a hop-up kit to 50 hp, then that might be the more logical conclusion given lesser expense, greater dealer back up, and enhanced reliability.

The KTM SMC is an outside shot. I haven't ridden it yet. I will in 2 hours so the comparison will be fresh. I'll post up after and hopefully you guys/gals can add some more insight into my cool dilemma. Thx for your time.

No disrespect to motards, racing them might be
fun for sportbike riding on one seems a little boring.
My kids ZX12 is exciting but the insurance sucks.I
had a Suzuki bandit 1200 that fit my needs nicely.
I will either get another one or a FZ1. Any stretch
of highway taxes be on a single or small bike.

Having owned RD and RZ 350's, I share your passion for light weight sport bikes. What they lacked in HP, they made up in the fun factor. Fun enough that I didn't mind the regular top end freshenings. Having owned a DR400S, which uses the same motor as the Motard model, I can add that it is seriously lacking in power. It hits "The wall" at around 80MPH where the old RZ with pipes would pull hard to 100. The Berg will run more like the RZ and would get my vote. If reliability is a big issue because of lots of street use and little racing, the big KTM with an LC4 motor or a Husky with the 610 style motor might be a better choice. Of course these bikes carry a weight penalty compared to the Berg. Husky makes a new design lightweight 510 motard as does KTM with their 525. These are similar to the Berg in that they lean more to the racing side. I currently own an MZ 660 motard which carries an even bigger weight penalty but is about impossible to break. Going to sell it and my next one will lean more to the performance side (specifically, I'm thinking big Husky). I know guys who like their MZ or Berg or Suzuki though, so all this is kind of a personal choice.

I've got an "E" model DRZ, that I converted for motard duty.
I rode the DRZ400SM a few weeks ago, and my first thoughts were "Man this is WEAK!" i'd be fun around the city I think, but I'd prolly still hanker for more snap.

My "E" model, on the other hand, I find has plenty of snap for on road use, aswell for Motard track nights (Although, when I'm chasin' the 450's and can't catch 'em......it get's discouraging)

If you do decide on going for the Suzuki, definately plan for the carb swap, cyl. base gasket, and allot for the Yoshimura cams/rev box, (and an exhaust) that stuff over stock will kick so much *** it's not even funny!!!
As far as the suzi SM wheels/brakes/suspension goes....it all seems quite nice to me when I rode the bike, nothing jumped out at me as weak.

can't offer an opinion about anything else tho.

G/l in your search and have fun with whatever you get!

Mike

I would go for the KTM or the Husaberg :p

Hevent tested the 625, but the 640 and 660 bikes are a LOT of fun!!
the drz has 35bhp and a ktm 640 has 55bhp..
And the fFS650 has about 60bhp! so.. you do the math =)
But dont get me wrong, the drz can still be a nice toy! I know a lot of ppl that do alot of stunts on these bikes:p

while comparing HP figures, don't forget wieghts.

The KTM 640's may claim big HP #'s, but in the straights, they are only marginally faster than my DRZ, but they do pull to a higher top end.

the 640 is 300 +
while my DRZ is ~265

a drag racer told me to factor one additional HP needed for every 7 pounds added, to get the same acceleration.

The KTM"s sure are sweet though (ridden the 625 and the 640's) they are pretty cool (after some mod's) in stock trim, they're kinda boring....like the DRZ400sm stock....ha ha

The DRZ400-sm will be fun up until 70mph, topping out around 80mph. So for freeway use it will be just satisfactory. SM bikes are not good freeway bikes.

On the sm track day, twisty road or for city use the DRZ will be very good.

Winning races - not designed for that.

***

600cc KTM, Husqvarna, Husaberg, etc are all capable of winning races and offer more hp zing up 100mph. 600's singles can be ok freeway bikes if you're prepared for lotsa wind blast. Great for short freeway runs. More stock top shelf components. The little extra maintenance is easy to do.

Take your budget, divide by what you want to do with the bike and try to decide.

Just purely for clarfication sake......
A stock DRZ400SM is 298 lbs dry and as mentioned above 35 HP

Like I said before I own a drzsm and the handling is great but power wise it not there at all, well thats for me at 210 lbs. If i'm not wrong I read 32 hp for the drz and yes 295 ish lbs dry. Double the hp or close and about 50 lbs lighter for the berg, in my head it's easy to see and thats why I'm looking for a berg next year.

Don't want this to be a bad pad fest or nothing, I thought I specified I had an "E" model (which I street plated, and motarded) to which I was refering my comparo too.....

Sorry for any misconceptions!

Thx,
Mike

"You did spec an E"....... sorry man......not too many of those bikes around I have a friend who races one moderately engine modded.....it pulls quite well..........
