KTM rear shock - anyone use one on their Berg?

Has anyone ever made use of a KTM rear shock on their Husaberg before? I was thinking of trying to fit one from a 450 / 525 (along with the KTM forks) onto my FS650 to make it enduro. I'm betting the forks are fine with the WP48's, not sure about the shock though since the reservoir is offset...

thanks,
Brian

The bottom mount on the shock will make the operation impossible, I'm afraid

I've done some investigating regarding a KTM shock on my 650 to make it easier to fit a twin silencer exhaust. The top part from a TKM will easily be merged with the 'Berg and since the piggy back has a different angle it makes room for the right side exhaust. Unfortunately the bottom part looks completely different.

Thanks - makes me wonder if a Husaberg lower shock mount (to the shaft) can be purchased and fitted to the KTM shock. Probably not...!

They share the same shaft dia (18mm) and thread size (18x1) but the KTMs shaft is about 7mm longer.

Why not just source a shock of a parted out FE ?. Much easier and simpler.

i purchased a used rear shock for £50 just this week. because they only fit husabergs there are less people after them. so prices are low.

they come up about once per month or at most two here in europe.

secondly it has been done!!!!

do search on this "2005fc550" he is steve mcfarland and he mixed the two. he has a website in his signature AND we have a link to it in the owners doc. i believe we mention this mix'n match shock in the doc anyway! under 'rear shock'.

pay attention at the back please!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the replies - I'll give the doc a look and see. I have been looking for a Husaberg shock for a couple months now with zero luck. Maybe I'll do a worldwide search on eBay and see the results. I was thinking of just revalving my stock one and removing the spacer that limits travel but in a perfect world I'd like to keep it for swapping back and forth...

i'm sure whoever does your shock will do an excellent job but i know that viking here does development work for NOST and that if you sent it there would have his undivided attention and free help for evermore from hom personally. a quick check of old suspension posts will tell you that he knows his onions.

secondly, viking bought the last shock that was for sale in europe at funnily enough £50 (again!) but shockingly, it cost £62 to send it to the states. i would have delivered it by hand PERSONALLY but no -- i sent it.

if i had no particular view on which suzzie co to send it to i would let NOST have it.

please do read the doc and if you can wait i'll be developing this rear shock over the next year.

We'll see - the KTM might be too tall for what I need. The difference between the FE & FS shock length is only 11mm longer. I'm in no rush so I'll have a chance to test my 19" rims before I make a decision. It would be nice to have a second set of suspenders though - one for supermoto, one for enduro...! Right now I'm trying to figure out gearing based on my 19" rear so probably going with a 45 or 46.

pt tape around it and measure!
or go by others here?
or mark the tyre with chalk and roll it in the workshop.

i didn't know about the difference in shock lengths but it figures.

did you look at the website?

The shock lengths were listed in the parts manual - showed a schematic of them side by side. I did look at the doc. It appears the KTM shock is 18mm longer than the FE shock! The KTM is set at more of an angle so it's longer. What's with the tape or chalk methods? What are those methods used to measure?!

nevermind, i was talking gearing.....tra-la-la!!!!!

if you didn't know, they should all have the same rolling circumference, it's actually the squat ratio you're changing with an 18"/19" change mate!

That makes sense - 18" = higher sidewalls. Hopefully I can dodge the rocks & roots well enough...!

Hi motobando
Husaberg forks are 5mm shorter than KTM forks except 07, you can shorten the cartridge rod , having a longer shock on your bike would make your bike handle awkward, if you want a shock, buy it on ebay cheaper that way

take care VIKING

thanks Viking. I can see how that would change around the geometry and affect handling. I'll just have to keep an eye out for a spare set of stock suspension.
