KTM DVSK in 2006 FE650e - Spacers needed under psrings?

Hi All,

This is my first post, I'm proudly the new owner of an 06' 650 with just over 140hrs on the meter.

I have not ridden the bike further than around the block, and it runs awesome, but upon changing the oil, there was quite a substantial amount of aluminium (nonferrous) filings in the sump and on the strainer. Is this normal? I've removed the stator cover and the clutch / sidecover / waterpump and everything seems fine. No evidence of anything loose or rubbing on the inside of the cases etc? Next thing I plan to look at is under the rocker cover to check the camwheel is not loose.

Also, I've read a fair bit on the site and have done a search before posting, so forgive me if this information is already up somewhere. My question is, if I were to install a KTM ATV DVSK (part#83036028044) on my bike (precautionary measure because the hours are high'ish), do I need to place spacers under the springs to get the correct preload? If so do they come with the springs? If they don't come with the springs, what thickness should they be? Or, should I just install new conical springs (they're reliable for 100 hours plus right?)?

Cheers

I can't help you with the washers etc but whatever you do don't keep the conicals.

I do a kit for 99gbp with thin shims and instructions supplied to get the install height right.

regards

Taffy

Nothing wrong with conicals if you decide to run them but there are some advantages of using dvsk.

Hi,

the KTM's DVSK kit is a straight fit. It contains all the upper and lower washers. You'll have to replace the valve seals because the lower washer doesn't go over them. In this forum are some posts about them and a member named Faust measured these springs with positive results (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9678&p=83543&hilit=valve+kit#p83543 & viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11115&p=94311&hilit=valve+kit#p94311).

I'm using them for some years already in my side-car engines without problems. Husaberg also sells a kit with valves, washers, valve seals and double springs #00060000030.

Regards,
Stephan

Thanks very much for the info gents.

Birdwoodberg, I had read somewhere that the conicals tend to break after 150-odd hours. Do you know if this is true? I think Taffy may have commented somewhere that they can even break with relatively low hours?

Stephan, thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for!

Thanks also to Faust and others on the site who have shared their experiences.

Some times they break exhaust on the decomp side is the most common. I replaced mine after one broke after 4 year of service and the new set have been in for around 3 years no ploblems. it must be a temp thing is my guess.

Cheers Birdwoodberg, I'm a bit paranoid that my 6 year and 140 hour old bike might break a spring and destroying the engine. I know Bushy got 220 hours out of his original conicals before going to a DVSK so I don't think its absolutely urgent to change them, but the DVSKs seem to be more reliable and put less strain on the valve gear. Not to mention mechanically quieter, better low end response, etc. So I think I will get a DVSK in due course, just for the peace of mind.

Kye, on my 2005 FS650 my original springs went 250 hours. Rt exhaust valve spring broke. There was no collateral damage.

This is the KTM atv kit. It comes with 4 sets of erryting in the pic. I just bought this set for my new(er) bike. A 05' FE650.

Had a worn timing chain and a failed cam follower bearing. Only about 100 hours on that bike.

If you are going to change the springs, I'd recommend getting a new timing chain, because you have to break it anyway. Cam follower bearings, because they wear out. A new head gasket, and valve seals. Oh, and I used new collets (keepers for the valve stems). The old ones looked ratty.

Just priced that part from moto tech in australia $144.65 bit of a difference to $75 whats on your box.
