Well, since the forum looks kinda bare,I might as
well jabber a little.I rode enforcer4's 520mxc
today and I was quite impressed. The handling
was very similar except for a little head shake,
but a damper should fix that.It had more subtle
suspension, turned just as good, had more low
end power, and button started cold.I can see why
the big KTM is so popular. If it is any heavier I
couldn't tell by riding it.He said his 600 berg
has even more power.I hope he lets me ride
that some time,as long as I don't have to start it.

If you cant start it you cant ride it (just jokin)

It actually starts very easy with the carby from my quad on it.

Hopefully Lineaweaver gets back with me soon on that other carb and we can take it out and you can get the crap scared out of you

I was not joking when I said it feels like the 94 has more than twice the power You will see hehe

enforcer4;
if i am reading this correctly, you feel that your '94 600 berg has double the power of a '02 525 ktm?
if thats the case then the 02 650 berg has 2.5 times the powe of the ktm. i say that because my 98 600 berg isnt a fast as my 02 650.
please tell us more about the power and handling differences between the ktm and berg.
thanks

Hi tuts,

Truthfully and honestly

The power delivery on the KTM is better it is more linear and without the sudden hit of the husaberg (more roll on) however recently riding t jet tims 470 I have to admit the ktm's handling is much much better but my suspension has been modified. Acceleration is much greater, the ktm is much quicker. The front rake of the ktm is much better and I feel it promotes a better turning ability and does not want to wash out as easy leading to faster cornering.

As far as a power issue is concerned I am fully confident that your 650 berg will easily overcome my 520 in a straight line drag or asphalt race with a simple twist of the throttle. On a track or course it will simply be determined by riding abilities the ktm power is fully capable of running with any bike in track conditions.

The hookup of the ktm is much much better less wheel spin and better power delivery the ktm supplied as much power as I can truely use and the wheel spin is kept to a reasonable level. Bike will pull up even in third gear when full throttle is applied even in muddy loose dirt situations

A fair statement must be made the husaberg has twice the bottom end not twice the ground speed.but the husaberg in the end will overcome the ktm in acceleration and overall top speed.

On a track the husaberg will prove slower due to my riding ability I just cannot use all the power available it simply has way to much. I hesitiate to apply full throttle for fear of it wheeling and having to back off to keep it from coming over.

In a race like a hair scramble or cross country where the higher top speed and higher power can be useful the husaberg will easily prevail.

Both bikes are simply great it is like comparing to near perfect bikes power and riding feeling are both excellent. I can give pro's and con's about each all day.

Reliability and parts avalibility will be the only thing that will determine which bike I buy next time when I decide to lay alot of my hard earned money down on the table to purchase my next new ride sometime in the next few years

This will give me plenty of time to make a educated decusion.

I will say however the ktm has a much more refined powerplant and as previously stated the ktm motor does not sound quite as busy and runs much quieter.

After doing 3 valve adjustments the ktm exhast valves are still spot on however the intake side has always been tight every time.

Maintenance schedules are virtually the same oil/valves every time you ride. maintenance is easier on the berg, cheaper to.

The ktm has a much more safisticated oil system I have diagrams if you want to check that out it has a metal hose that goes up and shoots oil onto the camshaft area promotiog higher lubrication. It also has two oil pumps.

It may just be more parts to fail in the long run I don't know only time will tell.

If you want to talk more I always am on yahoo instant messenger!!!

Thanks
Cory

Ok,I got my butt kicked.Will a 2004 fe550e
outperform a 520 KTM?Will it e-start hot or
cold.Is the suspension better?

enforcer4;
thanks for taking the time for the reply. i appreciate your straightforward opinions.

I saw a dyno reading on a fx 470 that showed
a peak of 42 horsepower.I can't believe the dirt bike
rags brag up the CRF250x as having great lowend
torque. The dyno test on those is pathetic.Even uncorked
they get less than 30hp.

i have a dyno graph of my 550 at the shop. my bike has spent LOTS of time on the dyno. best HP number so far is 51.1. no other dirt bike has beat it yet on our dyno, but there is an XR650 that is getting close. he already has me beat in the torque department.

Husaberg's indeed are going to be at the top of he dyno charts I was told that my full built 600 motor on my quad should do around 60-62 hp

Right now its sitting at 48.4 hp. Im confident that with the 540 kit and Ultimate 4 it will better Dave's 550. Of course that is if my mechanic doesnt sabotage my bike right Dave... Of course Dave will have a fresh motor and one of Dale's cams pretty quick so we will see!

I was grossly disappointed with my 2003 650 vs 520 comparo. Similar air conditions, straight through pipes, 4 hours dynoing and jetting on the same dyno:

650 - 49 hp
520 - 54 hp

520 killed it all over and had much better over rev.

Am doing same with 2004 550 this weekend.

Forget the peak HP numbers, what we really want to see is the torque curve. Pipe manufacturers know it is easy to get more hp by revving the engine higher, and they sell their products based on that.

Mr. Fontana 32.

Please share with us the results between the 550 berg and the 520 KTM
after the weekend.

Although powerband and character is more important than horsepower,It would be nice to get the facts:

sorry for the crappy quality, I dont have a floppy to get the files off of the dyno computer so i had to scan the printouts.

now, ive got a question, maybe Dale could explain this to me. ive head that horsepower and torque should always cross and 5252 RPM, according to this calculation HP = Torque x RPM ÷ 5252. Our dyno doesnt put the RPMs that it picks up from the tach input on those graphs, you have to manualy enter a conversion factor to get the numbers to line up, which is a PITA.

Dyno'd the 04 FE550 today, my faith in Husaberg has been restored:

17 Dyno pulls, hit 55 hp on the dyno jet, heaps of area under the curve.

Starting jetting
38 Pilot, 75 PAJ, 170 Main, 200 MAJ, ELQ 4.5 170 Main - 52 hp and seemed like it was hitting the rev limiter (it ewasn't it was too fat and wouldn't revout)

Final Jetting
38 Pilot, 75 PAJ, 158 Main, 200 MAJ, EKP 4.5 (55hp and heaps more area under the curve & over rev - hit the limiter)

Spent from 7.30 am to 1.30pm on the dyno.

Tried various combos of mains/needles + assessing the effect of seat on /off and removing MAJ to see the impact on leaning the very last bit of the top end (which is still too rich).

Also

Have the graphs scanned, can't work out how to attach them! - If someone can let me know hoew to do it I'd be grateful.

Have comparo between 03 FE650 (48 hp), KTM 520 (53.5 hp) and the 04 FE550 (55hp) on the same graph - this confirmed the 650 was a dud & I did the right thing getting rid of it!

Same dyno (Dyno Dynamics), similar air conditions, similar time spent tuning.

One thing's for sure it's still starving for air with the stock seat/air filter/air box set up. No wonder Mr Lineaweaver recommends a K&N pod.

Can discuss the jetting tried in more detail on the Fuel forum.
