Kokusan ignition problems

Hi,

I hope someone can help me. Maybe one of you made some experiences with the kokusan ignitions.

I have got a problem. I adapted a kokusan ignition from a KTM 520 exc to my 2002 Berg.
It worked really good for 5-6 hours, yesterday on a race it failed.
I think it has to do with the ignition. The engine just stopped, like as someone switchs my kill button. The engine fired again after waiting for 5 minutes.
Maybe the system cooled down and afterwards the spark plug fired again.
Can it be? I don´t know. The KTM iginition runs in oil and the Husaberg ignition runs dry.
Is that a problem? Is there a known problem of too much heat that spoils the function of the kokusan ignition.
And when it is, what is blown? The stator coils? Optical I can´t see any damage.

Thanks

Well it shouln't be too hard to determine what component failed, but I would be more concerned with the KTM ignition rotating the opposite direction than the 'berg.

I suppose that dues to the ignition overheating. The original ignition mounting is on oil, which cool down all the ,components. And when it runs dry some overheating hapens and all the things going wrong.
Better you fit your original SEM ignition.

hribman, sorry I cant help with your problem but I would like to see some pictures of your Kokusan mod.
Was it expensive for the parts?

Photos will follow. But I don´t know how to put them on this page.

Hi,
there has to be a reason why Husaberg or rather KTM changed to Kokusan in 2004.
I for myself had enough experiences with the SEM ignition. In numbers: I´m riding Husaberg for 3 years. 4 or 5 failed stators. Thats not only annoying.
Now it´s time for a change. I think the Kokusan ignition works on the Husaberg, but it´s not at optimum state. I have to work a bit on it. The stator hasn´t the right position inside the rotor. Not centered exactly.
I have to make a new adaptor with a bit more precise thread holes.

@twistthethrottle:
I have bought the ignition on ebay. Rotor from a LC4, because of the markings for TDC. CDI, ignition cover, stator and coil from a 520 exc.
And a little thing, I don´t know the english description, in german called "Hallgeber".
All in all it costed 140 Euro. Normally I would be forced to spend this money for a half piece of a SEM stator.
I was inspired by a german Super Moto team who is using the adpated version for months. The mechanic told me that it´s not that easy, but with thinking about it and activating some brain
I had some first success.

Hello there,

I got it.
There came off some soldering joints in my stator.
I think they have lost their connection because of too much heat
in the ignition cover, because of friction between stator and rotor.
As I said before, my first adaptor plate wasn´t build too precisely.
I made a new one and now it fits. Hope so.
I have resoldered some cables and now I hope it will last a bit longer.
I´ll see.

I have read on ktmtalk.com that some people had failures with their Kokusan ignitions, because of cold solder joints from the factory.

Hi,

if it is so I will accept it.
I´ll see how long it will last.
There is one advantage: The Kokusan stator is easy to fix.
You can resolder it, and even when a coil is damaged it seems to be
easier to rewind. So what shall happen?
It´s better than a failed SEM stator, anyway.
Now I´m going to do a long-term test..

Ignition

Also if you have the ignition cover sand blasted to remove all the paint and just tint it with some heat black paint this will help to remove some heat but just tint with paint do not over apply we just want the black to pull out out the heat and dissipate it.

Hi,

thanks for your idea but my heat problems are obviously gone.
The Japenese do not solder as good as we do.
Resoldering the cable connections was a great success.

thanks and greetings
