Kickstarting a Berg

I know this may be a stupid question to some, but I am wondering how hard is it to kick start a Berg with the left hand kick? I have a bud with an 05 FE450 and it struggles to start with the e-starter when cold.

The 07 FE450E with a 380 kit really has me intrigued (I love the flames!) as the 450s have too much power for my tastes and the 250 thumpers are too mellow.

Thanks
Scott

A Berg that has been ridden in less than a week can start cold in 2 or 3 kicks, if done correctly.

It needs to be done from slightly after TDC. At least your buddy has a Kokusan ignition. He needs to give a good hard kick from trop to bottom.

Pull Decomp Lever And Open Throttle Wide And 3/4 Full Kicks.
Let Everything Go And One Good Full Kick It Should Fire Up Nicely.
I Always Start The Bike With The Kicker And I've Smashed Both Legs
Very Badly In A Car Accident A Few Years Ago.

The 'Bergs aren't that hard to start, like they said above, for cold starts I just roll mine through several times with decomp pulled, then bump past tdc & kick it solid, starts first kick. Although I admit most of the time I just hit the ebutton, but I kick it once in a while just so I know I can do it.

although it's unused, UHE hs a service whereby if you describe how many kicks, how long on choke, how long before revs rose or engine 8-stroked, we can help you set up the engine so that you kick it once, it starts first time, it needs chike for as long as YOU desire and the thing won't eat plugs!

If you have good gas, a clean carb, the valves are adjusted right, your plug is in good shape and you have spark, all it needs is a good long kick and you need to mean it, no wussie kicks like if you started a Japanese.

Slightly pass TDC and you need to mean it.

BE THE SPARK!

my bike has the auto-decomp, and here's what works for me, 1st kick about 78.93% of the time.
-choke on, throttle closed
-slowly roll kick starter all the way through, full stroke.
-again, slowly down, past first resistance, to strong resistance.
-bring back up to top of stroke, and kick through forcefully.

Like I said, almost always goes first kick.

It looks cooler in the grocery store parking lot when you don't use the button.

Yeah but you look like a goof when you can't kickstart it and the typical Harley dude makes fun of you cuz and your "dirt bike".

Basically it all depends on getting the engine right past TDC and a complete kick all the way through. If you don`t do it right you will know  Don`t get in a hurry, easier said than done. I think all these bikes are a little different. What works for one might not work for you. My bike doesn`t have the decompression controls so you can imagine how entertaining it can be.

by the way, look at the 'taff crescent mod' in the doc. this helps 10-15% for free for sure.

go look fella!

I was pleasantly surprised yesterday how easily how a 380 and a 450 (ex-WEC bike) started using the kicker.

Scott, any of the new bikes are very easy starters. Only when they've flamed out when the engine is very hot will they need the hot start button. Any bike that labours on the start when cold has a weak battery or is not properly jetted.

So you like the flames, I like your style. The 380 with flames would be a killer down east....for jetting specs, check the.se site.

Dan Watt may have his FC 380 along next weekend with Elvis and LH. THey can give you an impression of that combo as well.

Tell us about the fc380.

Mine is a 97 Fe501e, and was sitting for about a month. Reading this thread, I just had to get her out yesterday and try to kick start. I don't have a decompression lever - so what I usually do is just hit the lady-button (for those who speak or understand german: das Damenknopferl :) ). Yesterday, I changed the routine and kick-started: flip the lever on the carb, open the petcock, try to find TDC, get the piston slightly past AND KICK. And I must have done everything right, because the bike fired up right away!
I have to admit that I did cheat a little bit: the bike was on the road, and I did stand on the sidewalk ...
