Kickstarter falls through when hot

Greetings folks,

I'm having some trouble restarting my bike when hot. Kickstarting finally works when cold (albeit not properly adjusted yet, still takes it's time to get going). When hot the kickstarter just seems to "fall through" most of the time, i.e. I get it to tdc or just past as usual, then when I kick it there's no resistance at all.

I'm pretty sure someone here will know right away what I need to check/change! Worn stuff, bad spring in kickstarter mechanism? Is it possible for the auto decomp to malfunction and open the exhausts too much or perhaps stick?

I also have a metallic, almost rattling noise coming from the area around the transmission cover when running. As this is my first husa I have no idea if that it normal, but it doesn't sound too good. Perhaps this is related?

Regards,
Lantz

My $0.020, dump the oil and check for metal. No compression when hot sounds bad, piston/liner is maybe damaged as a result of bottom end failure ( main bearings ? ) Rattle in bottom end bodes no good either.

I'll check the oil! Bottom end failure sounds like a serious thing, wouldn't this cause it to run bad? Cause when I do get it started (I've gotten it started from hot once), it runs just fine. And I think the noise is coming more from the back end of the engine, not from the crank shaft region.

Edit: when i slowly crank it to get to tdc it works as usual, so I definetely get compression there

Sounds like you have a problem with your kick start mechanism if you are hearing a rattling noise from that area.

Some basics please, how many hours on the bike?

Last time the valve adjusted? Have you checked the valves?

Is the kick start mounted de comp adjusted correctly?

Hours: unknown, didn't know squat about these bikes when I bought it, unfortunately
Valves: last thing I did (clearance only, not timing)
Kickstart decomp: missing... I'm relying solely on the auto decomp at the moment.

Is having a mechanical problem only when hot a common thing or is this unlikely?

Thanks for your help guys!

sounds like a problem in the kickstart pawl/ratchet assy. pull the cover while holding in on the kickstart shaft (to keep it from popping off) . if you don't see an obvious problem, then you have to pull the clutch (mark the position of the clutch gear to the crank and idler gears before disassembly) then you can pull the k/s and look it over. check that the crescent screws are tight.
read as much as you can make sense of in the owner's doc first.
