Kicking the beast - at last - stoked

Hi guys,

Friday the 13th, went to load the bike for the following days ride, pushed the button and.... nothing, well nearly nothing, anyway, as things go, I went for the easy option - pushed it up the hill and tried to roll start it - twice - to no avail (think I had the kill button on, but not telling my mates that).

So time to kick it, a few times, with no luck, then all of a sudden, she burst into life!

The thing is the kick that fired it up was so easy, and the same as the false kicks, so can anyone let me in on what the secret is to a good kick?, Ive read something about full stroke and purposefull full kick, but am not sure of my style - lets face it after coming off of a KX125 (you only had to bump it and it would start),the Berg is a bit of a trial.

I kick started it a couple of times that night (and was quite proud of my effort) though I tried the next day when the engine was hot - no luck.

any advice please?

Azza.

No I didnt  I thought that was primarily for when you drop the thing and it stalls with a gutfull of juice??

use the hot start ...

get that big bad berg on TDC , no throttle , made sure the idle is set correctly . and give it a firm kick .

and waddya know .... it's running

How do you know when it is at TDC? i have been trying for ages to master kickstarting my machine. I sheared the Kickstart shaft today as it backfired.
Regards
Dave

Just gently but firmly push the kick start down until it becomes solid..that is TDC..do this a few times to get the feel of it and to make sure that it is the firmest point, then and this is the most important bit, gently move it on a small amount over TDC...a very small amount...easy to go too far. Go to far & it wont start. Get it just right & it will start so sweet and easy..I know cause it's taken me 6 months to learn (kicking like mad randomly). Now I can start it real easy but yesterday I broke my shaft..see post "sheered kick start" all those months of heavy kicking. Heed the UHE advice; It works.

Just to add to the confusion, I'll share my story on this topic...

The bike had been sitting for 9months, and many will know i have been chasing e-start sprague issues, anyway the weather jumps up to 10C and I decide to kick the beast to life for the fun of it.

Fuel on, no choke, whack the throttle once to prime it and then do 5-7 light kicks with the manual decomp pulled in

On the last light kick I dump the decomp lever and Poof! the frickin thing is running.

I was simply stunned. I have never been able to duplicate it perfectly but the priming and lightly kicking it thru 5-6 times is now part of my starting drill and it is working for me.

1-3 good kicks is all it takes now.

Cheers

Mark

one thing to keep in mind about finding tdc is that if you have a properly functioning auto decomp, it will not become "solid " when you are at tdc. it takes a bit of "feel" to know you are there.

you beat me to it ned. the modern decomps are that good there is no TDC to feel - or fear!

bet you wish you wre at glen helen right.....wait.......wait.......now!!!!!!!

regards

Taffy
