Is it only the plastic bit in the sidecover that keeps the kickstart from coming out while riding?

The plastic bit is missing, but now the kickstart is extremely loose, so I'm suspecting that there is a problem with the kick start itself also. When I take it a apart, there is some kind of groove in the pivot, wich seems like there should be something in there but there is not.

Long story short do I need a new kickstarter or will I be ok just replacing the plastic bit in the side cover?

Anyone know how much a new kicstarter is? And will the later style shorter kickstart fit the older engines?

You need the plastic stopper on the c/cover to hold the kickstarter in place. The slight spring tension will hold the kicker there quite OK, a little tip is to drill a very shallow hole in the kicker that lines up with the plastic stopper and this will hold the kicker even better. Got this tip from Smets factory bike in '99 and it works a treat!

So it's normal that the kicker is very loose? If I put the bike on it's sidestand the kickstart will swing out, so it's very very loose!

Guilty, had a look in the doc and found what I needed to know :D

Seems that I'll need a new kickstart after all, this little ball bearing is missing on mine.
