Sorry if this has been asked before, i cannot find any thing about this.
I have a 2003 550 and would very much like to fit electric start.
I need to know is it true a honda cbr600 starter will fit and if so which year and exact model it would come from, also can any one tell me what other parts inside the motor i would need.
SORRY TO ASK BUT THE PC I AM HAVING TO USE HAS SUCH A SMALL MEMORY THAT I CANNOT DOWNLOAD ACROBAT READER OR LOOK AT THE WORKSHOP BOOKS ONLINE
As for mounting brackets ,switches, solenoid ,and battery carrier these can all be made or found local, many thanks

Hey Cookeye,
Suggest you consult your local Husaberg dealer for a parts list. Then the Honda shop to compare starters.

Good luck,

Mackberg :D

Cookeye,

The whole e-start kit is available to buy, if you choose - somewhere around the £220 mark.

Cheers,
Simon

Try getting in touch with Scully in Tasmania. He fitted a CBR600 starter to his bike. I think last he said about it was that it fitted OK but was a bit low on torque. I'm not sure if he later found a reason why his bike was taking more torque than normal to turn it over.

PS. You obviously have too much power in your bike & not enough in your PC! :D :D :D

This may sound stupid, but can I convert my FC400 to e-start for around $350 (or whatever 220 pounds equals)? I would love to add electric start, I'll call the dealer in the morning if that's the case.

Please let us know how you get on at the dealers.

Well, I called KTM Northwest and they said they didn't think there was a kit for the older bikes. They also said that all the parts to do it would run about $800, ouch. They did say there is a kit for KTM's that might work, I am supposed to call them back tomorrow for facts and figures.

If there's a kit in the UK for only $440 US, someone ship one to me, ok :D

The left side engine case half would need to be replaced with an e-start type along with quite a few parts . Unless you are planning to rebuild the engine anyway I think it would prove to be monumental task.

Here's a pic from this thread Relevant thread showing the e-start case half.

Well, I'm not looking to replace the case half in order to gain a "happy button". THat's why I asked in the first place. Reading some other posts lead me to think it was a matter of buying a starter, battery, and a button. As much as I hate to kick the crap out of my bike, when properly tuned, it starts very easy with the kicker and I'll leave it at that.

Thanks husabutt for helping me see the light :D

Well Jimmydean looks like you kinda **** out mate  .
Just glad i got the proper type of engine case.

thanks for the link to the other thread very interesting.

Yeah, I was told by Dale L. that the 550's cases are different internally. It is not economically feasable to install an e-start on the FC550's.

I'm not sure this is quite right - all 'berg models from 2001 onwards can quite easily be converted to e-start as the cases are shared. The only differences are the e-start gears and sprag clutch, then all the external parts and electrics. Even the required bearings are in place on non estart models. As far as I'm aware, nothing was that different with the 550.

If you're talking about a pre 2001 engine, then the cases do have to be changed and then it becomes unfeasable to add e-start.

Simon you are absolutely correct as usual!

I broke out the parts books and the 01 and up cases are e-start compatable.

On the 01's for instance 400/470 cases are sold as a set only. 501/550 are a different part # as is the 650.

Three different matched case sets and all are e-start ready. All are sold as a matched set only also. I read a thread here that the cases also include bearings.

Sorry for the incorrect info,
