Kick start does not "CLICK" any more ...

I had to do some work on my bike as the gear selector was stuck. Cleaned up, readjusted the valves.

Kick start mechanism was of course a pain to put back (with the darn ratchet held by that crescent thingy).

Now the bike starts A LOT more easily, EXCEPT that the kick start does not "click" when I release it and it does not seem to push as long, I guess it's a question of "reindexing" but I have no clue what that means.

All I know is that the bike starts and sounds a lot better now that I readjusted the valves and also reordered the clutch plates (the order of the two top one was inverted, and no I'm not going to blame anybody in particular for once).

I am just

i can only think that the ratchet system isn't working properly.

lets try this again ok.

slip the spring into the hole and get it hooked behind the sharp alloy edge. you'll have the straight point of the spring pointing up at you. ONLY place the inner workings of the kickstart on. spring into the hole.

fit hte kickstart lever at 12 o clock. pull 1/2 a turn and as the moment comes, shove the mechanism further down and in. release. the system will sit on the crescent. it'll remind you of being shoved back into a chair. that's it. your home and dry. remove the kickstart, fit the outter wheel.

finito

I did exactly what you say, Taffy. I think it takes some getting used to.

Oh well, I did not plan on riding right away. Wasted another cover gasket. Dan? You have my credit card information?

I have the weep hole issue to fix as well, so what the heck.

Alright, I re-opened the cover, and guess what? When I remove the clutch cover, the kick goes 180 degrees (or almost) down and then the spring recoils it strongly into the starting position.

SO... All I seem to have lost is the clicking noise? Unless there is something else that I missed?

Unless the "click" sound came from the decomp activation lever that I removed?

I have a feeling that's what it was.

Can someone confirm?

the clicking noise comes from the 'keyhole' button bouncing along the inside of the kickstart gear anti-clockwise. you may have had a change in the note but it should still be there of sorts. if it works then don't fix it till it's broke!

I am not talking about the repeating clicking sound from the ratchet (that keyhole-shaped thingy), which I still can hear, but rather the louder clicking sound that I used to hear when the kickstart would come back up. I think it came from the decomp lever. When the kick shaft comes back to "noon", the lever should be released and hit the case, which produces the sound.

Which means that the post-2003 (when the kickstart activated decomp was removed from the design) do not have the "back to noon click sound".

Could someone confirm?

Thanks!

Ok, so I will stop f-ing around with that and just close the cover already.

By the way, I removed the starter and attached gears until I get an updated sprague. It's all going to be kick start until then.

Going hardcore, like Taffy.

Nic,

It sounds like you did everything just fine, don't worry about the clicking sound. Sometimes my bike clicks and sometimes it doesn't, nothing has happened yet and the bike works like a champ. So how does your shifting of gears feel now? Working much better after sanding and polishing the selector fork I presume? Glad to see your finally becoming somewhat competent around your bike with a pair of pliers and a screw driver 8O

Regards,
