Kick start decompression

I had my motor apart and found the decompression shaft on the kickstarter bent and cracked. Does anyone know if I can block off the hole and use the handle bar mounted lever to start it like the xr 600 does??
I want to go on a ride next Friday,Saturday and Sunday and don't think I can get a part that fast. I know that I will have to kick start it several times. I think I should be able to bring it up on compression and just past with the handle bar mounted release and then kick through. Any one tried that??

Hi Bobzilla,
Most often the Husaberg will respond favorably to removing the kick actuated de-comp assembly.

FYI:
As a result of the new ignition system (lower rpm spark production) said de-comp has been eliminated from the 04 models.

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards,

Thanks for the input. I'm going to put a button head bolt with a rubber washer through the hole and a nut and washer on the outside and see how it works. Who knows it may start easier on the kick now. I'm sure that will stop the oil leak from there at the least.

I disconnected my kickstart decomp, and it solved my cold starting
problems. It's easier to find TDC, and then just ease it past with the
manual decomp lever. Gone from 20-30 kicks and a lot of swearing
to 5-6 kicks. I think the higher compression when kicking ignites the
mixture better, and starting from just past TDC allows the motor to
spin faster before hitting the compression stroke.

Only problem now after motard racing all day, I've got oil coming out
the weep hole again and the motor's sounding like a bucket of bolts :(

The way i fire the yamaha is:

cold:

choke on
decompression lever pulled in and held in
20 to 25 kicks no gass
let the lever out
2 twist on the throttle (cause I have an accelarater pump)
with the lever out I kick it slowely till it stops (light pressure on the lever)
pull the lever in about a 1/4 inch or less
kick it just pass TDC
Let the lever go
bring the kickstart lever all the way to the top
Then kick it as hard as I can

Hot:

Same as above with the hot start instead of the choke

Starts 1 kick every time. I can do this in about 30 sec.
Maybe that will help you guy's. Works on alot of bike's (that are four stroke).

Kickstart Decomp etc

Damned things leak oil - the manual lever can do everything anyway :p
I've put an O ring on the shaft (inside the trans cover) that should stop the leaking.

A steel washer with good quality sealant may be better than a rubber washer alone, or maybe both :p Also threadlock fluid on the bolt/screw - you know 'belt and braces'.

Good luck
