Just tought I might share my jetting adventures with the forum.

2002 650, lineawer x2 cam, stock exhaust, 450 High compression piston, Keihin MK1

Started out with 180 mj 50 pj unknown needle. It started terrible with these settings, then raised the needle(someone suggested me thsi in the chat room, but forgot the name), wich solved the starting but then gave a terrible stutter in low rpms.

Then i ordered Dale's jetting kit. Installed it as per his reccomendations wich were 160 mj 48 pj PAJ 1,5 turns out, Fuel screw 1,5 turns out, needle clip second from below.
Starting was ok with this, but it felt like a serious decrease of power on top rpm's (my guess offcourse, it hasn't been on a dyno)

Then I decided to follow the advice of a cranky wise old man and go a lot smaller on the mj, so went to a 150 mj, 48 pj lineaweaver needle clip on top . Felt like the topend power was back, but when doing the snap wheelie test it died. Raised the needle one clip snap wheely test was better but still bog, raised it another clip bog nearly gone when doing the snap wheelie test.

Am now planning to reainstall the AP, do the taff mod and try to get the squirt to 0,5sec.

I'm gonna keep trying different things and keep you guys updated. Any tips are as usual more than welcome :D

I have, just as every other jetting thread on this forum :) seems like Ideal jettings are like ********, everyone has got one :D

It's hard to decide wich route to follow as there are a lot of knowledgable people on this site saying different things. I have now decided to follow Taffy's jetting settings for the simple fact that he is in the UK wich is not far from where I live so climate and temp are the same. But if it doesn't work out I'll try someone elses advice.

BB, I have done some fiddling with Dale's kit also. I found it lacking on the snap wheelie test, so for next season I will set the pump travel to .020" (.5mm). Pretravel is .005" and actual cam travel is .015", which is the absolute minimum the pump will work at. This provides a tiny squirt, more like a series of droplets. I measure travel with a feeler gauge between the black plastic cam and my travel stop. My measurements are not actual pump rod travel, but serve as a reference for adjustment.

I used a 38 PJ last season and found the idle would climb a bit when hot, so I'll go with a 40 PJ this year. At present I have the 160 MJ and that seems OK. I have tried the clip in groove #4, but it runs a bit crisper in groove #3 (from the top).

the PJ is the wrong item to change for idle. the needle straight is.

thinking ahead one, you knew that but don't know any other way to get the thing richer at idle - right?

you can lift the needle a clip and that'll do it for you.

to lift the needle one you have to drop the MJ. and to drop the MJ you need to do a straight forward "no ifs or buts sixth gear test".

if it'll take a 155 you can raise the needle and you've gained at the bottom as well as the top!

Hey, Taffy, can you help to solve my problem?

At present I am running 190 MJ with 45 PJ OBDVR needle on the 6th clip from the top, however bike still seems to be too lean at the bottom, It works fine and has a great power in the middle an on the top, but at idling when i open the throtle quickly instead of powering up, it looses power and even dies if kept full throtle. When I lifted the needle one clip more (as high as it is possible) on the 7th clip from the top, it felt better, however still there is no smooth powering up if the throtle is being opened quickly. Any tips what should i do? my bike is FE450 '05 with FCR39 carb and 80 hours done. I am riding at the sea level and at present its winter out here so the temperature is quite low from 0 to minus 5 degrees Celsium.

Cheers,

MR

hey MR!

where do i start!

you're hopelessly overjetted. you are so rich that it would take 40 hours of non-stop testing between 6am and 6pm and you still wouldn't get there!

first of all you have a rich bog which is described in the owners doc. so much fuel is going in that it blows out the ignition spark IMHO.

go to a 168MJ and put the needle on clip 3. try either side of this as well so clips 4 and 2 to see which runs sweetest. you're only interested in fourth gera upwards here. i don't give phuq if she splutters or even stalls at low revs. it has nothing to di with 4th gear roll-ons.

then try a 40PJ and adjust the PS doing the 'snap-wheelie test'. fit a 60PAJ or simply buy a screw (PAS) and adjust to around 1/2 a turn out from closed.

reduce the APJ squirt using the BK mod. get a new iridium plug - IXU24 and then give up a day to testing and test, test, test. it's not a hobby. it's a job so treat it like one! it isn't fun, it's work.

get your mindset like this and you'll get your tests done very quickly....

a 450 with 190MJ?
I am running an FCR39 with 150MJ on a FE400 and that results in a brow spark-plug..

Had a little play today, reconnected the AP, did the world famous Taff mod. But felt no change in behaviour, there is still a little bog when snapping open the throttle. Set the pump at 0,6 as recommended in the doc but nothing came out, then set it to 0,8 and I little tiny squirt came out. So left it at that.

Waiting for MJ and PJ to arrive, then I can start playing seriously.

Anyone know what the hole on the righ next to main jet is?

it's for the starter jet or choke jet. but you don't have one if you brought the carb from a shop. the carbs stoled from yamondaki etc all have one.

i have already explained once that if yoiu have no choke jet you will need to keep the APJ squirt nearly on FULL. i did say you'd end up like the yanks and their old V8s etc from the fifties and sixties but i think the point went over your head....

the bog well you need to let me know your jetting again.

the APJ is pretty useless full stop and won't help or hinder the bog IMHO!

Well you'r right there, it wen't way over my head and to be honest so does your answer here :D

Carb was bought secondhand so don't know where it came of. (took me a good minute to figure out that Yamondaki isn't an actual brand of carbs :D :D )

APJ, is that the Air Pilot Jet of the Accelerator Pump Jet? (don't wanna sound like a pain in the ***, but these abbreviations are confusing for a novice like me.)

Jetting now is 150 mj, 48pj, DL needle 3rd from top, Pilot Fuel screw 1,5 out, Pilot Air screw 1,5 out. AP 0,8mm

the APJ is your accelerator pump jet. if it was an OEM bike carb it has a starter jet but why the phuq am i saying this when what i need you to do is say whether there was anything IN the hole in the first place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

to get rid of the bog drop the needle twice so you're on clip 1.

also change the PJ to a 38/40 and adjust the PAS (or get a new PAJ) to suit using the chart in the doc.

just to repeat (yawn) that sparks and i are on 145MJ, DL needle on C1, 35/38 PJ.

I'll check if the hole has something in it or not.

When I had the needle on clip 1 (first from top) the bog was a lot worse than it was now. Am now on clip 3.

I'm planning on dropping the PJ several sizes when my jets arrives. Any updates on that?

i was busy friday and they were closed saturday. will defo call tomorrow.

Taffy
