JET SIZE ?

i have a 1998 fe 600 enduro /dual sport california edition. it came with a edlebrock quicksilver 38mm h flat side carb. instead of the dellorto carberator that came on most of the bikes. it was a emissions thing with california. i am being told by my shop that i need a new jet for the edlebrock but that they can not tell the size any longer by looking at it. i called edelbrock and they say that they have the jets but they do not know the size. so my question is dose any one know what size that jet should be ?

i am also wondering what the right model of dellorto carb would be for my model of bike. as i am thinking that i might try to replace the edlebrock with a dellorto. as most of the problems that i have with this bike stem from the edlebrock carb. thanks, joe

Hi
I have one FE600-98 with the dellorto PHM 40 and it works ok.
Or you can go strait to a probably more expensive solution the FCR carb.
Start searching the ebay !!!

buy 2-3 jets that it might be from edelbrock.

simply find a container like a long tube 1" diameter where you can tell to the cc just how much it's holding. then put the old jet in the bottom of a small fuel tube at the outlet in the bottom. get a container ready to catch the fluid.

then time how long it takes to empty through the jet. do the same test with the jets you bought.

job done.

thanks for the tip taffy i was thinking the same thing but i was just trying to get close. i am starting to think about replacing the carb. all together. may be with a fcr carb. just trying to figure out the best solution. thank you everyone for the info. and the links.

You could always buy a set or carburetor jet drills. That would tell you tor jet size.Need richer.drill out the jet.Leaner, fill the jet with solder and redrill to the desired diameter.

i thought qwiksilver carbs were set using the needles????

thanks ned, i know what your saying as i was originally told that this carb, did not use any jets. but after taking it to a shop and having it looked at i was told that one of the jets was pitted or had a little corrosion on it and that it should be replaced but they were unable to get any info or a number off of the jet it self. so i am a little confused about the whole deal.

basically my situation is that i have a really clean 1998 fe 600 enduro dual sport with 2200 org. miles on it and it is just sitting in the garage not being used due to carb. related problems i am starting to think about switching to a fcr carb. but i do not want to just start a bunch of new problems with going that route. if anyone out there has done the switch or knows of a good place to find a good compatible carb. please let me know. thanks, joe

Hi Joe

As I told you I have a bike like yours, same year and model.
I have the original PHM 40, and the bike runs very good, sometimes its dificult to start but that's not specialy because of the crab. the major problems are the autodecomp that should be updated and the timing of the spark must be right.
Its probably easier and cheaper to go this way than the FCR, but both are duable.

Don't let your bike in the garage :!:
