I know this has probably been answered a thousand times, but if you would be so kind. I have a 96 or 97 FE600E with no liturature, I know no one else who owns a Husaberg, there is no dealer in Ohio (that I know of) the Husaberg website says there's one called Chicken coop, but no good number. I tried to call information for that city and no listing. I've searched the available forums and the info might be deeply hidden in another topic post. So....as you can see I've tried. Would someone please explain to me why I have 2 positions on my ignition switch and when are you suppose to use e-start and when to use the kicker? And why have I seen it refered to as a restarter. Like I said, I know this info is in here but sometimes I don't have an hour to do the searches.
Thank you in advance.

I used to have a FE501E and I never used any of the other positions on the switch but I think they were to to the parking light on (tail light) when you was parked. In other countries the bikes are street legal and that was one of the requirements. Times to use the kickstart is when you first start your bike for the first time before a ride, only use the e-start afterward for restarting. That is why it`s called a restarter. Your e-start will last longer that way. Hope this helps.

oooh, pick me! pick me!

heya volvo,

As bill said, the earlier bergs(all up to 04) have a re-starter, so called, because it causes quite a few problems when used as a starter :). People that have used it to start the bikes cold over a prolonged period of time have complained of failed sprague gears, burnt starters and more. Most believe it's due to the fact that it's an underbuilt system that just can't handle the job of starting the bike when it's cold and unlubricated. Only once the engine is warm, did the factory intend for you to use it.

RE: your ignition switch, are you talking about the keyed switch or the thumb switch? If you're talking about the thumb switch on the right side of the bars, that's your hi-lo ignition switch. It changes your ignition curve between subtle a more agressive setting. If you're asking about your keyed switch, I would only guess that it was a "one switch does all" scenario.

thanks,

Hi Volvonut:

I think that Bill is quite correct regarding the second ignition switch position. I have a 97 600 fx which has no lights and the second position has no effect.

Ahhhh the so called restarter. I'll be showing my age here. The 96 to 2000 model years starter was in fact a good ole starter. The old style motor (pre 2001) had a big starter and would start off the button hot or cold. In fact my bike came without the kickstart activated decompression hardware and cables. It would always start off the button perfectly and I had no idea until a few years later that it was missing parts. No wonder I could never budge the kickstart lever
When the 01's came out with a completely new design motor the new e-start system was christened a restarter. I believe the engineers were pressed for a deadline and could not figure out what the hell is the problem with the starting system so they just opted to call it a restarter by default. It worked sometimes when the motor was hot. The 02's and 03's were still called restarters but worked a little better every year. Finally in 04 the restarter title was dropped and it reverted back to a normal starter. Hot, cold or whatever.

01-03 restarter R.I.P.
