I just got a '95 FE501, it runs, will idle but randomly dies...the gas is old though so that may be that problem..perhaps not. the main problem and why i made this thread (i looked in "the doc" already), is that the bike only wants to go...about half throttle, then it craps out...not sure if it's mechanical or electrical, i literally just got it about 4 hours ago and it's dark out so i figured i'd see if anyone had ideas i could check in to when i tear in to it tomorrow.
*update*

when you floor it, it gets to about 1/2 throttle and just bounces there like it's hitting the rev limiter....i haven't pulled the carb yet and cleaned it, but i don't think thats the issue.

Pull the tank off and dump the old gas out, then pull the carb and clean it out and give it another try. You bought a good year of bike if it's been maintained.

By half throttle do you mean half open on the grip or about half engine revs? What I saw of my old failing SEM stator was that over time the engine had to be spun faster & faster to get spark. In the end you could only tow start it & then keep it screaming. It took a year or two to get that way but then I didn't ride the bike all that much.

one thing to look at while you have the carb apart is the holes in the jets. i had a ktm that sat for a spell, the gas evaporated from the carb and left a clear film inside the jets. biggest problem was the main jet. solution was to strip a piece of stranded wire and run the single strand thru the jet like a piece of dental floss. cured the problem.

ok i got it out today, the stalling problem is just probably it being...whiney. only happens occasionally. BUT

Likely a blocked, missing or incorrectly sized main fuel jet.

considering it happened randomly while riding...i'd have to think the jets are properly sized, i already cleaned to carb. i think it's the stator at this point.

Best of luck.
Please let us know what you find.

Kind Regards,

I my 94 vibrated the needle in two.
Pop your carb slide out and report back.

Oh, 8O
As in blocked main jet? LOL
[sorry, could not help myself)

Hope you and yours are doing well.

Sincerely,
Dale

Long shot, but could you have water or something funky going on in one of your engine stop switches that occasionally breaks down at high revs?

If you want to check for this, unplug the orange kill switch wire from the CDI & see if the problem disappears.

put a plug in it, cleaned the carb, adjusted the timing, cleaned the stator, seems fine now..

Hi there, this is one of those could be anything but annoying problems.

I have seen a similiar thing. Assuming the carb is clean and the slide is in the right way and no airleaks or oil clogging the air intake boot then I would say for sure it is electrical. Check the plug cap. First see it is screwed into the wire correctly or the cap is ok. It is proberly time to replace it anyway as they are fairly cheap. Check the wiring connections. Sometimes they are broken inside and the bike will run as the bits are touching but then the broken bits separate or don;t connect properly for a second and problems. Also check the tappet adjustment.

Having said all that though, my best advice is to check the plug cap is screwed in correctly. Take off the stator cover and inspect for good maintance. If water flows out as I have seen then for sure the problem is in there. If it is dry does it look new or is it full of rust on the nut etc. The most likely cause is the stator and just borrow and fit another to test.

Good luck.
