Is manual decomp needed?

I'm working on getting a 2001 fe650 sorted out. Do I need to keep the manual decomp if I have installed the upgraded cam and auto decomp? I'm wondering about converting the lever to a choke. Or am I better off leaving the manual lever for kickstarting?

Thanks in advance

HI

With the ADC and spring upgrade you don't need manual decomp for sure.

i would keep it. even tho i modded my '02 650 to estart, there was always a few times i needed the kick. and without the lever, it would be a royal pain to get just past tdc on the 650.

I am looking for a manual decomp device (which is in the valve cover), so if you ditch it pm me please.

My old 600 doesn't have manual or kick decomp and it works.

+1 My e-start is broken and i can't start the thing without manual decomp.

i have wondered about this point, my bike always starts first time as its got the moded cam but if i drop it or crash it always takes quite a few kicks to start. going back to my husky 510 days using the manual leaver after stalling made starting much easyier.

I'm going to chime in on this discussion, all be it old, for the sake of those who maybe fishing for auto decomp starting solutions:

Have a 01 fc550, factory auto decomp, lever and kick starting hardware; until such time I removed, yes removed the cable for the kick starter tie in to the decomp was I able to successfully kick start the bike, usually 1-3 kicks when just past tdc.

The cause, the resistance created with the cable unto the kick starter was just sufficient to create an insufficient kick start. I spent many of hours reading starting woes forum discussions only to finally find someone else having removed the kick start hardware as a cure.

In my case the other way around - auto decomp upgrade - no manual kickstart lever on the handlebar but the kickstart-decomp-wire in use - still working great that way...
