Is it advisable to turn off the fuel between rides?

I have an ongoing issue with bad and hot starting ('02 FS650). All the usual bits are done like rockers etc. When running it runs and pulls well :D

While out the other weekend after persevering starting it (30 mins kicking) it fired. Then after the first stop it took another 10 mins to start.
At the petrol station after that I turned the fuel off and it fired first kick (only to last 100 yards down road as forgot to turn fuel back on DOH  )

Has anyone else had issues like this or is it the norm?

Fish,
the bad starting...could it be the strength of the spark. i diagnosed my poor starting wrongly...renewed the rings to find the spark had disappeared due to knackered stator.
the usual bad starting of warm single cylinder 4-strokes is only due to stalling or falling off. normally if you turn it off it will start straight away. does seem odd that it does not when fuel tap is on. the float in the carb should cut the fuel off when the bowl is full. if this has dirt on the seat and is letting fuel in...it could be flooding your engine.
my way to start a flooded 4-stroke is to pull throttle fully open for 30 secs and release it to fully closed and then kick bike..it nearly always starts straight up. { by kicking bike...i meant operating the kick starter in the usual manner...not climbing off and putting boot through panels! just in case someone is pedantic about my mech lingo!!!}

the bike needs a LEAN set up when warm you sound rich. the atomiser and needle wear badly on the dell ortos and may/probably are the reason for the juicy situation.

also check that you have the fuel jet in your carb that some have found missing. for this go to the doc and carburation.

this should cover it.

Cheers for the reply Taffy. I've just picked up a new needle (K51) n atomiser which I'll be fitting tomorrow along with doing a service.

One question I have is where to start with the tick over screw? Being a bit 'tick on the carby side how much should I turn this out or how much light should be visible under the slide? I am just after a base setting here to get the thing started, then we'll work on the fine tuning.

.............additionally if your valves are too tight it will produce the symptoms that you describe.

Hi. I would check the kick lever and the intake rubber.
It´s very important how the lever is installed.

Best of luck to you.

Cheers for all your input.
Taffy I owe you a beer!!

Changed the needle, atomiser and sprag clutch.
Tried to start it on the (re) starter from cold but the battery if b@ll@xed.

So resorted to good ole leg power.
Would you believe it it started FIRST kick!!!

Here's a pic of the worn and new needles, quite obvious when you see them next to each other.

Anyway off to the pub now to celebrate ;-?

Pic of worn and new needles in my gallery. (Cannot seem to be able to attach :( )
