Is all this REALLY necessary?

Hello Everyone. Sorry for a long post

I been lurking around quite a bit around here and found great info. Thanks ALL!.

The only problem I am having with the whole (new to me) Husaberg game is understanding everything. I am pretty mechanically inclined and understand my way around most things.

I own a 2008 FE 550 just about to hit 45 hours on the bike

I was reading the 2005 Service Manual and am getting really scared. The maintenance on this unit is insane. The oil changes I can deal with and all the small greasing and bleeding etc....

However:
There is a page (J4) It says to replace: con-rod bearing, balancer shaft bearings and main bearings.Check a whole lot of stuff etc.

Is all that really necessary at 45 hours?

Or am I missing something.

I ride trails and trails only. Never taken it to a track and I don't really bag on it much at all.. Compared to other riders I see. I just love cruising around mountains.

Is there a different maintenance schedule anyone can recommend?
I am just confused at why I have to pretty much tear an engine every 45-50 hours?

Thanks a bunch...

I don't think so. Those specs are for a bike being raced. Valve clearances, oil, clean filters and ride.

Oh okay...

That is what I do now and maybe I will do like a whole engine inspection in winter but I was getting worried. Is there anything else that people recommend?

I want this thing to last as it was a huge purchase for me.

And parts are expensive and hard to find.

I am still open to suggestions

45 hours its till new :D

should run for at least a couple hundred hours plenty of people get huge km out of them

eg for one example see enginenumbers post on the last page

http://husaberg.org/husaberg/17145-what-s-your-journey-got-you-your-husaberg-5.html

I would check the axial play of the crank to make sure the main bearings are properly setup; take the ign cover off and measure how far the crank moves side to side in the bike you want around 0.5 but bit under 0.4 is OK.

watch the cam follower bearings and valve springs near 200 hrs you can put dual springs as a safety measure, there is quite a choice of springs

http://husaberg.org/mechanical/10680-all-about-valve-springs-nice-pics.html

if you check the valve lash regularly say every 30-40hrs it will give you a feel for how the valves and also the cam follower bearings are going

once you start riding it a lot it won't be the engine that annoys you its the forks :D

Thanks all for a lot of info...

I took my bike out for almost 6 hours over the weekend...

It was AWESOME.... I keep hearing wierd noises when I go over bumps and such.

Something like a chain slopping around... But it came from the front... Maybe I am just paranoid. Because it does it in gear or in neutral, fast or slow. But when I rev the engine it sounds fine...

Anyone ever experience that?

Hey there,
the bikes do have a weird bit of engine noise until under rpm, the drive chain makes plenty of noise, I always wear ear plugs , even with the chain correctly adjusted I think it still clatters ,just as the induction noise or whistle under the seat.

A bit like getting into a race car , you properly not going to hear the radio or be able to adjust the air /con much

Maintenance schedule ," well I did have to change the battery on my old 550 , the original only lasted 7 years".
It once sat for 6 months without charging it , still the bike started off the battery. I removed the kick starter altogether , it just gets in the way when I had to put the choke on. ( Would make a great paper weight in the office).

I rarely checked the valve clearances , only changed the oil every 3 rides ,perhaps the same with the paper oil filter at times. If not dusty conditions I used to get 3 rides before cleaning the air filter.

I run cheapo mineral oil ( Delo ) and cooking oil on the air filter and hardly oiled the drive chain , come to think of it , I didn't even wash the bike much , to busy riding it. That should save you money for parts later on.

Keep the swing arm bearings greased , and as above keep an eye on cam follower bearings , its pretty cheap to replace them at the 200hr for piece of mind , then just keep on riding it..

If your on the throttle all the time and racing it up in the rpm, that's when it pays to be more mindful of oil and inspections.

I think with the performance you get out of the engines , the maintenance is not so bad. The race schedule is so you will hopefully never experience a break down or engine failure under race conditions if followed. What they are saying there is once you go past those recommended time frames , you are getting into the unknown probabilities with the engines under race conditions after the 60hrs. While they may last longer , it is a flip of the coin I would say.

They are a pretty robust bike in my experience ,just ride the damn thing and enjoy..

By the sound of it I should be all good for a long time...

So far I had Lucas Synthetic in it. I have enough for another 25 hours..

Then I was thinking of switching to 15W-40 Rotella T non synthetic as its cheaper and i can do an oil change every 10 hours instead of 15... DOES THIS SOUND OKAY???
I read somewhere people had no problems with Rotella

I guess I am just paranoid... I don't ride hard, just cruise and do a couple hill climbs ...

I am sure it will last for a long time... And I will probably do Dual Valve Springs and Cam Follower bearings like you guys are suggesting at approx 200 hrs...

Thank you all...
