Hello All

I just purchased a 2002 FX470e from a friend. He told me the motor was recently rebuilt, suppose to have all the updates...

Taffy recently posted a question about the decline of this site. I certainly hope it's not true. I am going to need the collective wisdom here.

My first story about the 'berg. It is HARD to start (I know tell you something new  ) Using the Owner's Doc on this site I just finished adjusting the valves. I took my time and got it done. And it starts better now. I still have a way to go but it was a definite improvement.

So, a BIG Thank you to all who make this site what it is!

Taffy's our resident doomcaster. He's been predicting the site's demise since some time around 2000. Once you've been around a bit longer, you become desensitized to it, much like teens and computer generated violence.

Could you give us a better idea of the starting procedure now? We might be able to throw a few more pointers your way if we have an idea of what it takes to start your ride.

Welcome to the site!

Didn't have much of a starting technique other than kick till my foot was sore... :D

If I tried to use the choke I couldn't get it to cough. After adjusting the valves I hit the e-start and it turned over but did not fire.

I pulled on the choke, hit the button and it fired. Let it idle (no throttle) for a few seconds, then off with the choke. It ran nice.

Next cold start I will try the manual de-comp lever for a few kicks, then choke and see what happens.

The weather has been lousy here recently and I haven't had much for days off, so I have been reading UHE more than riding...

Thanks for having me :)

I've got a 2001 and here's what works for me:

1) Don't use choke
2) Pull decomp lever, WOT and five good kicks
3) Full kick with no throttle. Repeat up to 10 times if no joy.
4)Goto 2

With this process, I usually get to ride in under 20 kicks. The only thing I can think of telling you that may not seem obvious is that a full kick is very important in my case. If I don't use the ball of my foot to kick, my toes hit the footpeg, stopping the kick early, in which case hell will freeze over before my bike starts.

Also, I never use the e-start when it's cold. Even the manufacturer called it a restarter for these years.

Thanks, I'll give your procedure a try next time....

I have been giving it a full kick, well as full as I can.

If I let the lever all the way to the top I seem to re-engage the auto decomp and can kick through with no compression.

I find if I move up towards to nose of the seat I can get a good kick with the middle of my foot. I find my left foot gets sore from the kick start lever bottoming out and stopping, quickly...

my son gave me his 2004 fe 450 because he was sick to death of it ( mongrel to start / stalling etc ) .. i cleaned out the carb and air cleaner , reset the valves and replaced the plug .. 2 years on the berg now and i love it !!!
must say tho that i am used to starting left kick bikes .. choke on , no throttle , one kick to turn over and a good second kick and away we go .. choke off after 1 minute , 2 minutes to warm up and off we go .. 2000 k's on , change oil every ride ( delo 400 ) air filter every second ride ( depending ) keep the sparky bits clean n dry and NO COMPLAINTS from me .. ps i never use the e starter .. pps my mates always reckon there is something wrong with the berg because of all the weird noises the motor makes .. MUSIC TO MY EARS ..

I could have purchased a Honda/Yamaha/Kawi bike, but I like being different and the deal was too good to pass up...

I may go through the carb next, the bike did sit for a while. It was drained of fuel but I can't be sure the card was completely dry before storage.

I normally do kick-started the bike. The whole three times, since I got the bike that I've started it from cold. I didn't have good riding boots on today and thats why I tried the button.

I am still definitely learning this machine.
