Intermittent Starting Problem

I have an '08 550fe. I have been having an intermittent problem kick starting the bike. Always starts cold 1 or 2 kicks. Starts hot 1 or 2 kicks. But, on occasion I will have to kick the bike over repeatedly to get it to start. The last ride it took me 20 minutes to get it started. After that it started 1st kick the rest of the ride. I know that intermittent problems are hard to diagnose....but, any ideas would be helpful. It seems doubtful that a tight valve would cause this, or it would be consistent. Float level? Spark plug going bad? Seems like it might be fuel related?

Nope.....what exactly does the hot start button do exactly? Hey berger are you on Az Trail Talk? I live in Scottsdale and I have seen someone post under the same name on the site.

Yes, that's me.
The hot start button is the red knob on the side of the carb, next to the choke. It creates a metered vacuum leak to help the bike start during a hot soak condition.
When the bike is hot fuel will percolate in the carb causing a rich condition (flooding). The hot start helps lean the mixture so it will fire. As soon as the bike starts push the knob back in.
If you have not adjusted the AP duration on the carb, the flooding becomes more prevalent. Just touching the throttle when trying to start the bike hot will inject fuel into the intake tract making the rich condition worse.
1) Try the hot start, if that works, fine. if not
2) Check AP duration, float level and jetting .

If the valves were tight would it not be a consistent problem? It seems more likely that it is as berger describes, a rich condition caused by heat and lack of oxygen. I will try using the hot start and see if that will remedy the problem.
