Intake boot split!!!!!

Have purchased a new 06 450e. 10 months old 50 hrs on it and replaced intake boot twice. Only problem so far. :D But it seem's to split in the same place every time, right next to the clamp. So with the second one i replaced i made sure the clamp wasn't too tight. SPLIT again. Is it a problem with the intake boot, sh..t quality. Or does the carby bounce around too much which, causes the split.Or is it the way i put it on, I'm lost!! Will a ktm 450 intake boot fit?

I went through two of them also, now I haven't had a problem since. I did not tighten the clamp very much after the second one. At least they are cheap and easy to put on!

Do you take the carburetor out often? If you use some type of silicone-based lubricant like WD40 to help putting the carb back into place, the rubber may not like it and it may damage it, same with the hoses.

I would think about a different type of lubricant. Sorry, can't think of one now

I thought the french liked "astroglide"

sorry frog i could not resist...

Because you live in a town named after the 1st Frankish king you think you can make French jokes?

Thanks frog you might be right. WD40 is my friend at the moment, and could be having a reaction with the rubber. So i Will change my boot and use a different lube. I will keep you posted.

I had one to fail also, but it was way too tight and not slid up far enough, my error!

I had a failure also, and did an amateur analysis on the failed part. It appeared that there was a cut into the rubber, as if a blade had been set too deep during production. The replacement part had no such cut. I'm hoping that bodes well for durability of the new part. If it does fail, I'll let you know what KTM manifold fits!

A little info about WD 40. Originally developed for the military, and know as Water Dispersant #40, WD 40 does NOT contain silicone http://www.wd40.com/Brands/wd40_faqs.html . It is a hydrocarbon or petroleum based lubricant as can be seen in MSDS sheets http://www.wd40.com/Brands/pdfs/msds-wd40_bulk.us.pdf It's main ingredient is alphatic hydrocarbon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aliphatic

Whereas a silicone lubricant such as http://www.crcind.com.au/catalogue.nsf/ ... enDocument is a bit different. http://www.crcind.com.au/catalogue.nsf/(TDS)/TDS3055/$FILE/TDS.pdf

keep your WD40 for electrics and siezed threads. use a mild detergent {washing up liquid} or dishsoap as the SPAMS call it! better yet use a silicone based grease for sliding on rubbers! but i would not have thought the WD40 a problem as all excess is drawn into engine. unless you left it immersed in WD40 then it should not eat rubber so quickly..is everything aligned properly?

I have never used any lube on my manifold and it tore 2 times, so I really don't think thats the problem.
