Improving my 05 FE

So I have this old Berg (05 450) that I am thinking of fiddling with as its worth nothing to sell and still runs very well.
I thought it was a great bike suspension wise until I rode my YZ 250 2st.
Ok, so the YZ still pings about a bit in rocks compared to the Berg but everywhere else its much better. ("sob...I always thought Bergs were so awesome"...)
More plushness, better bottoming resistance, no mid stroke harshness, and I dont even seem to ever even think about what the rear end is doing.
I still think the Berg is more accurate (?) through the steering but the YZ is just..ahh..I dunno...better!

The Berg was set up by a experienced suspension crowd here in Vic, Australia but I'm thinking of doing some of the needle valve & bladder mods etc to the rear shock and whatever works with that era of forks that some of the other crowds do.

What works? Any ideas? I don't mind spending a bit and don't say "Ohlins"...that aint going to happen....
 
well that is the last year (of 14mm rod) pre the change to what is known as the 12mm rod Open Cartridge fork.

I have spent hours upon hours trying to get them right. yes the 12mm is better from the off and very cheap used if you get them off a KTM. they were fitted from about 2004/5 to the KTMs. so they should be cheap used.

the rear shock is also bloody hard work! my advice is to get the right spring for your weight. I'm 196 pounds nekid and I was on the 95/111 progressive and I think yours is the first year of straight -rate so you'll need to tell us your weight.

I would go straight to the maximum HSCD and turn the 17mm nut right the way in. If you're on the dirt you want 18/19/20mm offset TCs and NOT the 22s that they supplied. again, it is a KTM standard item so easy to buy cheap used. the last three numbers on the top TC part number are the offset.

Thanks Taff. I'm 96kg with my wife smiling so about 104 kitted up.
Stock rear spring.
I think I they went up 2 spring rates in the forks.
When I have 1 of the kayaba SSS forks off my YZ and hold 1 of the WP forks in the other and do the old bounce down on them test, the SSS forks just feel so much smoother, less stiction, & much easier to press down for the 1st 100 mm. Even with fresh oil etc the WP fork feels notchy in comparison....
 
I sell these SKF fork and dust seals that make a small difference. but you you can spend 100 hours on them and then go buy a set of Kayabas and they are better before you touch them. feck knows how WP got a good reputation...

Blunny, not sure if this will help but I ride with soem guys from Rad Hardchrome here in Brisbane an done of the guys is a suspension nazi...he's good for set up tips tho.

I'm about the same maybe a little less weight geared up and found a 133mm air gap (to start with and as yet unchanged) and 5.0 weight springs from Tecknik on the fornt made a huge difference...I got the idea after kitting up my 625 SXC for an overweighted cape run and found it so stable, yet technically over sprung, that I deceided to run the same rate in my berg and what a massive change. Clickers will be sorted to personal taste and rear spring is a matching unit I can't be certain of the rate but it's to my weight (with gear) check out the teknik webiste for recomms.

Few things I've noted for what it's worth on much screwing around on my Berg.

a. Fork height / triple clamp setting has a massive impact on my bike...go half a mark at a time through the forks over the same test area to find what fits for you. I also run a GPR V2 damper unit on 4-5.5 setting

b. Rider sag / static sag settings were pivotal on gettign a base that became very stabl every quickly

c. I increased the rear pre load on the fly, to balance the bike over rough ***** and G outs it didn't need much but I've gone a poofteenth over standard sag setting and the bike feels very stable and solid through all terrain. I run pirrelli scorpion medium to hard tyres and float between 12-13.5 pounds of pressure....works for me but of course there's a million variables as we know

The bug has bitten again now. 380 kit is on the way. So now it's suspension time! I will update when I get onto something.
 
So my engine parts are on the way. Im still confused on which way to go with suspension stuff. Following Taffy's advice I have been looking on ebay and found these triple clamps;

They are off an 06 525 XC. What off set are they? Will they be better?
