i'm trying to determine if my late 02 470 has the two

RE: i

Mines a 650 03 model built in Oct 02 and its got the 2 bearing balancer.
Don't think you can tell by the vin.

It's stamped on the compliance plate near the vin N#.
In Oz they do anyway.
The year model is the 10th character of the vin.

#8,9,10 = 302....so i guess it was built in march 02? seems kind of late for an 02

doug FFS!!!!!!!

go look up the doc!

look under chapter one. the very first chapter. it has the title "year identification"

10th means 10th. but if you have a look at the doc you'll know won't you!

thats right doug, it doesn't! so you can conclude from that that you only get to know the year can't you? i don't think anyone here has offered that it would give you the month. i know that my bike was imported to the UK on the 19th december '01 and was sold new on the 22nd. i believe that it was made earlier that month.

bearing counter balancer. can i tell from the vin number?

I don't think you can tell from the vin. If the c'balancer is original, the easiest way to tell is to pull the clutch cover. Two obvious items are different on the clutch side of the engine - the clutch basket & c'balancer shaft:

1) If the basket rides on a bronze bearing, it is a single bearing c'balancer. If on needle bearings, then its a double bearing.

2) If the c'balancer shaft has a step in it then double bearing - if not, then single - see the workshop manual for photos of this one.

However, there is an updated special double bearing c'balancer for early '02 and '01 models. If your engine was originally built w/ a single c'balancer and later fitted w/ this updated balancer, there is no way to tell other than splitting the cases.

BTW - my '02 has the single brg version.

thanks mogly. now that's easy enough to do. i recieved a double bearing balancer and updated rocker arms when i bought the bike but i dread installing the updated balancer so i take my chances
