There's a guy where I live that's trying to get rid of a 2001 501. He says that he has the MSO so that I can go get it tagged. Just over a year ago I totaled my DRZ in an interaction I had with an 18-wheeler. I am putting it back together now, but this might could be a better decision all together.

From everything I read, the 501 was a pretty good bike, but I want to know what a decent price is on a middle of the road one? All stock, I can't say a whole lot for it. What externals should I be looking at when I go get it to get a feel of the overall condition of the bike?

If all goes well, I hope to start spending a much larger amount of time here. Setting up the 501 for dirt and supermoto if things work out.

Looks like an 02.
Check "the doc" for more information on the 01-02 bikes.

The 01-02 bikes had some durability issues and there are several updates that can be performed.
Bike looks clean, but price should depend on updates performed.
MSO....if your state is like mine they will want a reciept showing that the tax was paid on original purchase. If you are going to titile it and don't have that reciept, you are on the hook for the tax on the original MSRP. You may check on that.
I am gonna take a flyer on the price and say $1500-2500 depending on condition.

For what it's worth, the current NADA guide values for an '01 501 are: Low Retail-$1,695/ High Retail-$2,275.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll be sure to ask him what updates he did if any. I know he is at least the second owner, so I'm waiting to get an MSO in hand before I make a deal
