Igniton killing

Hi second post on here, I have a 2003 650, or so I have been told, it has FC at the start of the frame number and 3 in the right place for the coding system, and a 40mm Dellorto carb, when I bought it, it was a shed, matey had butchered the wiring, he had fitted indicators but no flasher relay(missed that when looking it over!) It had some non descript digital speedo that was'nt wired up to anything(missed that when looking it over!)It had a brake light but no brake light switches(missed that when looking it over!)It had a kill switch that did'nt kill the engine(missed that when looking it over!) I have rewired it according to the 2003 diagram, but the engine runs with the key in the off position, park position, and on position!, I am assuming because it is a competition machine "FC" it just starts when you kick it. which wire of the three from the stator to the coil/ignition should I switch through the key switch to stop it starting green, red or black or is it not possible? I do not want to randomly choose a coluor and short out the SEM coil/ignition unit being as they are like rocking horse poo to find, I can stop the engine fine by earthing the orange wire as per the diagram, but cannot stop it from being started by anyone with enough leg!!!!

Hi

So you have the wired it wrong !! BUT look at the good side, most of the guys with those bikes have the opposite problem ... they can't start them even with the key ON

Hi ned37 and zagz, thanks for the pdf, I have them all for years 02 to 05, I wired it as per the pdf, even when I link the orange from the coil to the black lead off the key switch it still sparks, but when I push the left hand switch kill button it stops running and this button is wired into the loom with the orange wire!! The other thing which is odd on this bike is that the wire colours from the stator conform with the 2003 schematic 1green, 1red, 1black from the stator, 2 yellows and 1blue from the gen, but the motor has the two piece clutch cover with the extra screw fixing behind the kickstarter boss like a 2004 model, but it has the Dellorto carb like a 2003, not the FCR41 carb.

Hi

By the colors of the stator wires that you say, it's one SEM stator, so that's a 03 not 04 (kokusan). So others parts might have been changed, don't know ??

Have you tried to check if your ignition key switch is working correctly ? It can fail also.
From what I've checked in the 03 manual, the orange (kill switch wire) will be connected with one brown (ground) in the off position. That is exactly the same as hitting the kill switch (that you say it works).

So check if in the off position, the key switch is making what it is supposed to do.
