Ignition timing

I have a 1999 FE501E the stator went bad so we replaced it. Stator part #250202-01 installed it like manual say's TDC comp. stroke line up mark on stator with mark on fly wheel, right mark for electrick start that is what we have left for kick start with a dot in center. When I check timing with timing light the marks are advanced to the left of window at idle. Have tried to correct but even at full retared position can not bring marks in window. Should I line up stator with mark on right side of flywheel and leave it or should I be able see it in window with timing light. :?:

Hi Chris,

You had it aligned correctly when you installed it! The mark on the stator is positioned there so you can verify it to be aligned with the appropriate flywheel mark by looking through the cover inspection hole. The static initial timing is for the plug to fire ~ 15 degrees before TDC at idle, and then gradually advancing up to 30 degrees.

On my 2000 FE501E, using a dial back timing light, at idle, I had to dial back 15 deg. to get the mark on the flywheel to line up correctly with the mark on the Stator.

The CDI advance then starts to operate, so by about 3200 rpm I had dialed back an additional 15 deg. for a total of ~ 30 deg.

It would take 2 pairs of eyes and 3 pairs of hands to map it. Too much for one person to hold, twist, look and write.

Regards,

Joe
