Ignition tested good on another bike...

but trying to reinstall it on my bike, I cant get it to spark more than once in a session. I have the stator plugged in to the cdi, the cdi grounded to the case, and am holding the spark plug threads against the head. No regular sparking. Any ideas?

By ignition do you mean the CDI and stator or just the CDI was swapped. If you didnt swap the stator, you may want to try that next or at least check the ohm readings on it.

Taffy had the entire ignition (stator, cdi, lead and plug cover) and said they started his bike first kick. I have reattached everything as simply as possible, and haven't gotten more than intermittent spark. After this report, I suspected that perhaps the regulator is no longer providing a proper ground, is this possible/logical? I tried a makeshift ground to the case, but no real improvement. I am going to try to solidify the ground tomorrow, but wanted to see if I can get some feedback here. I have had the bike since sept, and have ridden it probably 100 miles total (its a street supermoto...) and it's starting to get depressing to look at.

???? what does the regulator have to do with spark?
what wires do you have going where?

The black from the cdi was plugged in to the grounding block behind it, but I think the ground is no good. Sorry was sort of late last night. Grounding block, not regulator.

Spark plug?

I there a chance it is not an ignition problem? Is what you are judging as random spark normal?

Maybe a little more background information is needed. What is the problem, when did it happen and what were the symptoms?

Bike ran good one day, cut out once the second day, and a few times after, before tearing it apart, i could get it to run, but it missed and was overall gutless. Ordered a sparks stator from taffy and rebuilt the carb according to the doc. Got the stator back, but wasnt able to get a spark. Sent the entire ignition system to him and they started his bike first kick. Have a new plug in it. I think I rectified the spark situation by cleaning out the ground system, it fires regularly now, but I still cant get the bike to start. Fuel has been getting to the plug.

Is this bike new to you? have you checked the valve adjustment? Checked the oil and filter for metal? Any chance of a cam or rocker roller bearing failure?

It is new to me.oil looked fine, and I adjusted the intakes, haven't gotten to exhaust but the intakes didn't seem too far off. Exhaust is next on the list

the bike sparks regularly now. valves adjusted. decomp adjusted. ignition timing close (need it to run to get a light on it). i can kick for days and nothing happenes. i tried priming it with fuel in the combution chamber, as well as with starting fluid, and a couple times it coughed to life, but died out shortly after. PHM40 with 195mj, dr272, 35pj, k51, 45cj. i just put all new parts in it. tried a 38 that came with the bike that i havent touched, with the same no-result. it seems like a fueling problem, but im not really sure where to go from here, unless someone wants to sell me their good-running bike carb so i can just slap it on this bike....maybe a fcr?
