Ignition Side Cover Question

I'm checking the valves on my 2005 FE550 and am taking off the ignition side cover to turn the rotor to TDC.

How much oil will there be in this side cover? On other makes of bikes I've had there has only been minimal oil on this side with it coming through a weep hole, so you didn't need to worry about losing all of your oil. Is it the same on the 'Berg?

Thanks
Rob

Definitly no oil in there...

I just use the kicker, take plug out, put plug wrench (or better) a deep socket in hole to keep straw aligned straight. That is so the straw doesn't get stuck between piston and cylinder.

Turn over with kicker and wait for intake to open and then watch the straw come up and stop. Should be at TDC.

Ityl come around and shoot the straw up as it's coming up. The cam and valve springs cause that. If you put it in gear and keep some pressure on the rear brake as you turn it you can control the rise of the piston.

That will work whether you turn the flywheel with a wrench or use the kicker.

Check/ adjust intake and then exhaust.

pull the cover and rotate the flywheel until the staple's leading edge is in a line between the middle of the crank and the lower edge of the left cover screw hole at 9 o clock. when all three are in line you're at TDC.

Thanks guys. Got 'er off no problem and did my 1st valve adjustment. They really needed it! Much easier to get to TDC by taking the right side cover off rather than using the kick starter (IMHO).

Rob
