Ice studs for trail riding fun (not racing)

With winter arriving last week and lasting another 4 months I'd love to ride my Berg on my land. I've seen the wicked ice racing setups but that's not for me, just light trail riding and fun. My tires are Michelin Star cross (I think) and the knobs are worn down but still in good shape. Any suggestions?

Would prefer to leave tires on and screw studs into the knobs, if I lose a few no big deal. I've looked at the Kold cutters and Maxigrip sites and the Maxi's seem more durable. My homegrown trails are a mix of single track and quad trails nothing really hard Thanks!

To just screw studs in without removing and lining your tires you will need to use fairly short screws. With such little support you will loose a lot of screws and even have a few knobs torn off.
There is no really easy way to do what you want...I would recommend that you should try and get a good used set of pro built race tires that are no longer competive but still structuraly solid.
They will work better and in the end cost you less...make sure you get 2 way tires, many are studded for RH turns only...good luck.

I have a set of old trelles you are welcome to try..... They may be rather unpleasant to mount since they are a little crusty.

Ice screws don't work that well off of ice. They dull VERY quickly and are not very long.

I took my Berg out yesterday in about 8" of snow/ice and I slid everywhere 8O no traction and the front end kept washing out. Too scary for me! Then I took the CanAm 500 quad out and could go everywhere  what fun, no fallin down, did slides donuts you name it. I can see why folks ride ATV's easy peasy. My husband thinks I should stick to them in the winter...and get over this dirt bike thing. :?

Doug (mud400)...what are "trelles"? I don't care if they're old n crusty.

I have seen a US version of the carbide studs at http://www.maxigripicestuds.com nice idea but pricy.

Doug the mud man Well yaaaaaaaaaaa I'll give those Trelles a go! :bounce3: After all I can't let my silly hubby talk me into only riding an ATV this winter, how lame is that. Although it's easier to start with FI. I'll PM you on them and thanks in advance for the help!!!
