i want to change my carb....for the following reasons

the throttle pull is too hard. what gives here...my 96 was much better. also i think if the slide had rollers the return spring could be lighter and it would be easier to control (modulate) small throttle openings.

so the question is what to use and where to get it (pre jetted)...oh yeah and how much is the set up?

Heaps of info on the FCR conversion on this site, just do a search. If throttle pull is the only problem though the Dellorto can be as light or lighter than an FCR. I found the biggest problem was the 90 deg bend on the carb top. I adapted a bit of old brake line but I've since discovered that the LC4 KTM top would do the job nicely. Once you've done this and lubed the cable you can fit a softer slide spring as you've dramatically reduced the friction involved. My FCR is heavier than the Dellorto was.

Dougn1, I also have an 02 470, my throttle pull is no harder than any other bike I've ever had. Have you tried to lube the cable, clear any dirt out from under the throttle tube on the handle bar, and double check the cable routing. I also noticed that if the bolts that hold the throttle housing onto the handle bar are not tighted evenly or are over torqued that the throttle would bind and cause hard throttle pull. Good luck hope this helps.

dell orto do three spring rates and a lot of owners change to the lightest spring.

Ditch the Del Orto they are poo. They make starting harder and fitting a FCR or Mikuni TMR will give loads more pickup and a touch more up top.

I have a 2002 650 and this was the best thing I changed.

To start mine now when cold I only use two pumps of the throttle and then she starts second kick and then I put the choke on to keep her running. With the Del Orto I used to work up a right sweat getting it going

thanks Taffy,

i wonder why they have different rates?

i learned the hard way why you need a minimum spring force...to close the slide when you chop the throttle.....which takes some force on a big 4 stroke. it seems like you would want the min spring rate necessary to do the job

anyway i'm going to see if i can find a lighter spring

you answered your own question. minimum force!

different engines suck harder than others i guess!

you need to be sure which diameter of spring you have plus the length. this is very important. there are loadsa springs and the back up w/ dell orto is poor.

don't leave people toi guess for you. check it out before ordering.

OEM will always error on the side of safety.

you can also change to a slide with no middle post (you'll see it when you pull it apart) and let the spring undone by 1 1/2". so if you can swop a slide with someone that's another way. shame you don't live in the uk coz i have boxes of the things at 'my place' from my ducati days.
