I need instructions on checking the electrical :(

I need to take my bike apart to check out pretty much everything. It is right now totally unable to start and I need to check it all inside out. It's getting ridiculous. This thing needs to be overhauled in order to run.

The owners manual does not explain specifically how to remove the battery, for instance, and the video, well #4 unfortunately stops half way.

What do I need to remove to access to the battery and the electrical wires around it? I've been told that the rear shock needed to be taken out in order to remove the battery. I suspect that the top part has to be unscrewed, am I correct? I saw where a lot of the electrical wires were located.

I also printed the hard start guide but there are a few points that remain unclear. It says to test both "loaded" and "unloaded".

I am not a mechanic. I am going to learn anyway, it's only a question of going ahead and doing it. I can't rely on other people to do it for me either. But I have no clue what "loaded" and "unloaded" mean.

Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

have no fear, i am not mechanic either, BUT we have loads of expertise available. because of the good folks here. I have done much on my bike that i would have not otherwise done. As far as removing the battery, just unbolt the top of the rear shock, remove the bolts holding the battery basket, and the wiring connected the the terminal posts and wiggle it out the back. I just had mine out.

Thanks. One has to be patient too. It's not KT with 1000 times more visitors and also 1000 times more trolls.

Now if I could get an idea about what "loaded" means :)

Froggy:
The battery can also be removed by removing the two starter bolts (allen on the 01's) and remove the starter by pulling and wiggling it. The battery can then be unbolted and removed.

I'm pretty sure it just means with the starter cranking (loaded) and at rest (unloaded).

battery out through the in-door.

the battery can be removed by:

1)remove the two allen bolts holding the starter to the bracket.
2)wiggle starter out
3)remove two allen bolts holding bracket on.
4)remove bracket
5)remove two bolts holding battery basket(one on chain roller, other on the other side of the frame)
6)remove positive lead from solenoid
7)pull battery basket out through the hole created by the starter

thanks,

I think I am going to end up going through the electrical check process also. So what testing gear do I need to get as I have nothing at present.

LeFrog, the battery can also come out by taking off the exhaust and tailpiece and mid section pipes - well that's how I did it when I changed my battery over last week.

Gents,

Loaded means while connected to its load, as to the CDI if checking the Rd/Blk resistance of the stator leads. This means sliding a straight pin into the connector where the lead enters to make electrical contact to the wire.

Unloaded means while unconnected to its load, as unplugged from the CDI if checking the Rd/Blk resistance of the stator leads.

Hope this helps,

Joe

Edit: I should have pointed out the straight pin insertion was to make contact to the wires for the DVM while the stator and CDI were plugged together.
