just seen your name on the entry list taffy , got my entry off so see you down there :D never been before any idea what the tracks like ?

i know it well grunty!

done 4 meetings there and broke my foot there 5 years ago.

it's VERY topographal. steep climbs, off camber ledges, ride through a quarry (could you have guessed!), the top of the hill is rough and pitted with rabbit warrens everywhere. if they send us through the woods it'll be tight and off camber etc.

will be good to see you at last.

trust you are fdoing it as a two manner wiv yer ol orange buddy?

Good luck Taffy!!! The ride sounds killer.

Be sure you have a good hydration system and drink plenty of water. You might consider cutting a sports drink in half, IE 1litre of sports drink, and another litre of water in your hydration system. My camel back holds 100oz's of water that's like 3 litres of water, and I drink the whole thing in 4 hours on my tougher races, and never have to P. I don't usually put anything in my hydration pack, but, I do drink a 400 calorie sports drink just before the start, no more than 30 minutes, and another at the pits some 2 hours later. Each of those is about 1/2 a litre, so that's almost 4 litres of liquid in 4 hours and I don't have to stop to P. Be sure and drink plenty of water during the preceeding 4 to 5 days to be sure you are fully hydrated. You'll be amazed at what this can do for you.

Best of Luck!!

Good luck gramps!! You are an inspiration for rest home citizens all over the world! I hope I can still ride when I am your age. Well, maybe I am being a bit greedy, and should just hope I can still walk at your age! lol. If anything bad happens, be sure that you can still type, so you can still keep things interesting around here! :D Do you know if they filmed any Doctor Who episodes in that quarry?

If not already, you need to use something like THIS in your drink. It will fight off cramps, and you will have better stamina. It makes a night and day difference. I use it whenever I race or do a hard ride. I am half your guys' size (whilst riding the same heavy bike), out of shape, and I still usually can put up a decent performance.

Forget that Hydration stuff Taffy, just before the race have a pint and a handful of aspirin....you will be right... :D

Go Taff,

Cramps are the other killer. I get magnesium pills from the supermarket or chemist. My missus is a pharmacist and since she got me onto them no problems. 30+ deg and lots of water and magnesium and no worries. Drink before you feel thirsty, keep sipping, don't guzzle. No diuretics like alcohol and tea and have a good time. Remember to finish first, first you have to finish.

Plus one Dale.......My last two race weekends were 35 and 38... I did what Dale suggested and was amazed at the fact I didn't keel over at the end of those weekends... I kept drinking water like crazy the day after...
Good luck ol man ! make sure no Black cans the week before.... :p

Kwit yer whinin ya poofer! over here in the desert we used to have a GP called the Vigrina City GP. Now that was a mans race for men only no teams or any of that ***** 4 1/2 hours and if you didnt time it right and hit the finish 2 seconds early................. ........ another bloody lap of rocks.

Heed the advice of being hydrated BEFORE and during.

good luck mate :D

Taff,

The pills are just as described, Magnesium. Maybe in Pommyland they call them something else, but over here the Blackmores brand simply call them Magnesium with a blue label. Available at most Chemists and supermarkets and probably health food stores, although I don't frequent those. I doubt that they are prescription, or banned anywhere else. My wife, the pharmacist, who I love and trust, says you can't OD on them, so get them into you before and during.

Drink slowly and regularly, guzzling just goes straight through. And yes, physiology is part of it as well as age. I had it explained to me years ago that all other things being equal, which of course they rarely are, your body's ability to hydrate halves from 20 to 40 years old. And things like alcohol and tea and coffee are diuretics which result in a net fluid loss.

And as others said, and I meant to, hydrate before. I'll drink heaps over the preceding day, get up to pee in the night maybe 3-4 times and put 2 litres of water into me after breakfast over 1-2 hours before riding time. If I don't do this stuff, my 52 yo body suffers seriously. If I do, my endurance shows the kids who are still learning this stuff up, which is fun.

If you are going to be working as hard as it sounds like, you are going to need something more complete. If you can't find something like what I recommended, do yourself a huge favor and go to a real athletes store (like a cycling or endurance running shop), and see what they have for electrolyte replenishment. One cannot effectively just use one element, as basic cellular and muscle function also needs postassium, calcium, etc. The commercial sports drinks are crap. Try to find something without sweetners. Use it in your camelbak.

well i finished at midnight last night but i have the auxillary tank fitted. it's red unfortunately but there, the bike looks a mess nowadays anyway so what the hell!

i filled the main tank and watched the fuel rise up from the fuel pipes back up through the fuel petcock and filter into the auxillary tank. took 10 minutes to fill to the brim from which i closed the lid quick!

if i have any strength left i'm using it for 'other fruitful things' so i shan't be doing my usual sunday evening report!

as captain oates said to scott "i may be gone sometime".
