I have an 09 FE450 and I am considering putting on a different skid plate with a little more coverage. I am not a big fan of aluminum skid plates. The Hyde Racing skid plate looks like a good option. Has anyone mounted one of these on an 09/10 and if so what do you think of it.

p.s. For some reason Hyde Racing is a taboo word on KTMTalk.

just a heads up, call and check and make sure they actually have it in stock. i ordered one for my 06 off their website on the 30th of sept. it has still not arrived. appearantly they are manufactured in south africa. i call once a week and they always have some new story about customs or some other shipping mishap. im giving it one more week and then im going to cancel my order.

If you can't get that one, you might want to check out the carbon fiber from Pirie Performance Products (P3). It will take a little bit to get because it is a one many operation and he hand makes all the orders.

I tried to call the to PS folks for over a week to ask some questions. They never did answer. I ended up getting the factory Al plate. It's very nice. I did get the Hyde clutch cover and it's a nice piece.

Mine arrived yesterday, although it has been sat at my freinds house in Dallas for @12 weeks. I have not even unwrapped it yet, but it does seem physically bigger than the OEM one. Gonna try and fit it up on the weekend and will report back.

Yes, they're shipped out of South Africa - but they're physically made in District 9.
They apparently have no problems with production. The issue is that the "immigrants" keep eating every third unit. Hence the low shipping numbers.

RE: Re: RE: Hyde Racing Skidplate

Ok finally got the Hyde bashplate mounted up. It took about 10 mins and that including drilling one plastic plug out of the lower frame rail/cross brace.

So my opinion, i am a little surprised it didn't extent round the sides a little more and i have tried to cover that in the photos. It also does not look like it allows for a header shield to be fitted, as the fit there is not perfect. Hyde have not followed the stock plate idea of lipping up and over the frame cross brace, so there are no fixings at the rear. They are using 2 bolts to bolt the rear to underside of the frame cross brace. There are 2 plastic plugs threaded in frame that need removed first (i pulled the head off one with the pliers so had to drill it out - doh). This does mean its more involved for oil changes and thats a downside for sure. The front mounting basically copies the OEM version, with a longer cap screw and an aluminium spacer to bolt to the same place the stock one fits.

I had no issues lining the 3 mounting holes up, although the back ones need a bit of shove, as the plate sits a little proud on my header shield. I have a small concern about how many threads are engaged on the rear mounts, as i tried threading the cap screws in first to see how far they went and the answer was not far. I ended up with an extra washer on one side to get it to nip up and have also used a spot of loctite. Again not good for regular oil changes. Oh like all these bash plates, i drilled a small hole in the side and cable tied it to the frame, for some extra security. Don't want to loose it on the first ride if it all comes loose.

So all in all an easy fit, just maybe not perfect and the jury is out on the level of protection. I have a big ride tomorrow, in the order of 300km, that includes some rocks, so i will be interested to see how the Hyde copes. I have shown the 2 plates together, OEM and Hyde, then a before and after shot from each side to remind you how the OWM one looks.

RE: Re: RE: Hyde Racing Skidplate

Can you still get to the upper oil screen without removing the skid plate?

Joe, i am thinking oil changes are out with it in place. You can get to the paper filter housing no bother, but i fancy the sump plug is a no go with it in place. There are drain holes in the bottom but i cannot see how you can get a wrench in to under the drain bolt.

Shame as the stocker makes that deal a cinch.

Got my P3 skid plate for Christmas. I'll be mounting it up later today and I'll be sure to take some pictures.

I have the P3 carbon plate installed and it is great. It takes a 1-2 min. To remove. Not a big deal.

I've installed and been using the Hyde skid plate on my 2010 FE 390.

Easy to install and remove, pretty good side protection, light, and seems pretty rugged.

Me likey. :-D

Anyone using the Hyde plate on a 2008 Berg? Or is the stock aluminum one better for esp. for oil changes?

Thanks Colleen

They work great. Oil does collect in the bottom of the skid plate. Not an issue if you clean your bike after the oil change.

Not sure if berger said oem or not? but they are very robust protect well & look good to @ 159.00 from us!

Still running the stocker on mine and happy with it, but my old KTM530 had a Hyde and what I liked about it is it did not bounce back up nearly as much engine noise as it did with the alloy ones.

I took my Hyde off for an oil change the other day (which is quite easy) -- and I was stunned to see the scrapes and gouges on the bottom of the skidplate. 8O

Just what the heck have I been running over? Oh yah, now I remember. Anything in my way. :^)

80 hours on the Hyde so far and still lovin' it.
