My good racing buddy Dan and I are heading from Canada to the 2009 Tuareg Rallye in Morocco next March. We'll both be on 2008 FE550 Berg's from Ross Rocher Sales in Stratford, Ontario.

The entries are in and the planning has begun in earnest. Dan picked up his bike late last week and mine is due in soon. To tell the truth...I've never even ridden a Berg, but I do have a close relative, a 2000 TE610 (left kick) Husky.

The Tuareg starts off in Spain and works its way down into the desert of Morocco, using some of the same sections as the Dakar of years past. We decided on the FE550 after looking at several other options. Hopefully it will provide the right balance of agility on the knarly rock sections and speed on the open desert.

Feel free to chip in with any set up tips and prep you might have on the bike...there's no need to go "full rallye" mods for this event. Big tank(s), protection, navigation equipment...all will be added, but we'll keep it simple...or try to.

Can't wait to get my hands on the bike and start putting in some time on it.

Glad you posted this over here as well as ADVRider.

Best of luck and keep us posted on your preparation etc.

Hi, I rode in this years Tuareg as my first Desert Rallye and think it's a very organised event (german efficiency) The 550 will be a good choice (and so much better than the old Husky). You will only need a 13L tank as the support vehicle can meet you during the day and you will pass petrol stations at other times. I saw other Husaberg's in it this year but have to confess that I did the Rallye on a KTM 450 as my Husaberg 550 has been playing up (overheating) and the sand dunes wll boil your bike without a fan kit in no time.

If you have any questions let me know as I feel I know a lot of the pitfalls you can fall into on your first rallye having made them only a few month's ago. If you're going there to compete and do well get some gym time in starting now. The going can be very fast if you want it to. I've never been so fast offroad before, 140km/h on gravel tracks is pretty intense. However you can lose so much time making a navigation error that consistency is the key.
Through not knowing what i was doing I lost 4hrs though missing one check on the first day and never got it back finishing 19th overall.
