hi got a fs650s kind of bad to start have noticed 1 thing the air screw was fully in making a rich mixture would this make it harder to staet also have read on here about cleaning the stator area ect supposed to help can any one tell me best way to clean this out also what equipment to use cleaning many thanks

On the 2004 models the stators are very very reliable. Cleaning is not usually an issue although good hygiene can't hurt. All of the stator discussion is usually about the 89-03 models with a SEM stator.

The fuel screw adjustment is critical to starting for sure. Adjust the fuel screw similar to an air screw on your two strokes. Try to achieve the highest idle without it backfiring when you rev it and then suddenly close the throttle (at least that is where I start the process). Start with 2 turns out from all the way in. Fine tune it as you put some miles on your new setting.

The big one IMHO is valve adjustment. If the valves are too tight it absolutely will not start. How many hours since the last valve adjustment?

Clean carb jets are also a must. The small jets in the FCR carb get plugged easily if the bike has sat for some time without it being run.

the bikes been run regular so i was told and not sure when valves last adjusted as i havnt had bike long its done 130 hours or 4500 miles

Is it that it takes too many revolutions of the starter before it lights or does the starter seem weak?

I would go with setting the fuel screw first and then adjusting the valves. At some point in the near future carb rebuild and check your timing chain. If its never been replaced it is almost time. At around 150-180 hours a top end spruce up will be in order.

congratulations on buying the last untamed animal left in the wild.:eek:

the screw under the middle of the carb - at the front near the head is called the Pilot screw. the reason for this is because it adjustes the PRE-MIXED fuel and air and wither reduces it in that ratio or vice-cersa.

if you want less of the air to it it is a jet in the front face of the carb behind the "bellmouth" (note quotes). if you want less fuel you change the pilot jet in the usual place.

as a general rule:
if the adjustment is from the carb entry to the mid-point it is either an 'air screw' or a 'fuel screw'. after the mid-point it will always be a pilot screw.

adjust this in until you get a hanging idle then back off. stop the bike, then count the turns in to closing.

if within 1/4 turn of 1.5 turns out then the PJ is spot on. if outside those parameters then
under 1.25 turns = need a smaller PJ
over 1.75 turns = need a smaller PJ

you can trust Eric, you'll get sound advice from him....and me I hope!!!:D:D:D
