A friend has been wanting a moto for some time and calle me earlier to say that he had landed a deal on a Berg. He wanted me to help him get it into Moto trim, easy enough eh..........

I know nothing about Bergs, he was told it was a 450 2002 and its in Enduro trim.

The bike was about to get its piston done so the engine was in bits, its now in a box.....

I have to say, ive never seen such a mess.

We need to make a decision on

A. take it to someone like DCR
B. Have a go

What do you lot think?

We need to identify it.....first.

The box the engine came in had holes in it so I dread to think what parts are missing.

Here are some pics, see what you can tell me.

Oh, my mate has just joined the forum, HUSABOY - go easy on him, he's from Widnes ?? :D

Big thanks lads.

Is it a 2002 450

The piston that needed replacing - there seemed to be another bore / tube thing that has identical marks on the inside of it.

the fact that there wasnt a 450 until 2004 kinda means its not going to be a 450.

its either a 400 or a 470 and i think its a 470.

Eh....careful.....you can buy a running Berg of this age for 1500-2000 u.s.d., that is in perfect running order....it is VERY easy to spend that on getting this engine rebuilt, after you round up a crank, and Lord knows, what other parts are missing.... cylinder sleeve ruined? ...piston looks bad....Chassis looks decent....maybe try to find another one like this one, and then you have a parts bike?....Berg's are fun to ride, but parts can be a chore to round up.....and pricey. I would research the 470's.....while the engine is apart, there are some MUST DO UPGRADES to the engine, starting mechanism's, etc.....read the DOC....it will get you up to speed.....Good Luck !!!!!...

p.s.you will need a new stator, if it has not been replaced already.....that alone is $300.00 u.s.d.

Just from the photos

I could not see the rocker cover , cam or rocker arm assemblys either.

Couple of clutch springs/collars missing too. Collets and retainer off that valve thats loose on the head. Why would they only remove one? cos its probably knackered. I'm guessing there are a lot of bolts and so forth still in the crate? The other bits may be in there.

I heard about this young fella once with a bit of an attitude, he worked in Ely in the UK and had a reputation for being pretty handy on a Husaberg engine. I'd pack that stuff all back in the box and post it to him.
I can't remember the guys name but remember reading somewhere his Husaberg built engines are doing pretty well in Sidecar racing :D

I will have to say.....sending the thing,(engine), to Taffy, is a good idea....the freight will kill u, but he will have the parts you do not have, and can make the needed upgrades....it wont be cheap tho......of course, if you were looking for a cheap bike, you would never have bothered with a Berg !

Basketcase!

Hello.
I got a lot of pictures of the word basketcase ;-)

Keep the bike as sparepart and buy another bike is my rekommendation.

it's a 2002 model which came out in november 2001 for a year. it has the singler oil drain which makes it a 2001 or 2002 but the waterpump plate is ribbed so it's a 2002. also the rear shock has the screw in the nut on the HSCD and the 2001 had only the screw.

I'm loathed to offer you anything but heartache and misery so i don't expect the job

I can see the nikasil liner has had it and a rebuild is going to be £1,000 including parts i reckon.
piston 150
liner 135
gaskets etc 70
cam chain 40
mains 100
labour 300
and about 200 worth of non-stop pain.

however, it will be a rocket at the end. my advice is that if you put it together on the cheap that you go for a flat-topped piston and lower the compression in an attempt to save the motor.

the 470s are a grenade and are ALWAYS siezing. i bet a pound to a pinch of salt that the liner is warped and that is 300 quid gone straight away.

of course others will offer you the world....

regards

Taffy

If I am not mistaken, that is about 1450.00 u.s. dollars....which is quite a bit, for an older Berg....it will be cool and fast though, and run for a long time........for a total rebuild on a big thumper, that is not bad at all.

Perhaps the owner lives in U.K. which will make freight a lot cheaper.....I do not see a valve cover.....with all the parts missing, I don't see how there is a chance to get this thing going without taking it to a Husaberg shop, that is sure to have lots of spare parts just laying around. If you have to buy all these parts retail, it will cost a fortune.
Maybe someone on this forum has an engine.....it would be easier. THe parts have value, and could be sold for something....I don't know....it is a mess for sure.....
Good Luck,
Mike

Taffy - Cheers fella. My mate has opted to take it to DCR in Preston. circa £750 +

Its going to cost him a fair bit to SM the things also but after watching the British Elite at 3 Sisters hes well up for it now.

Ill tell him to join this forum, you seem like a handy cunch o bunts for a new Berg owner.
