hi,
im getting a supermoto in a few weeks hopefully and im deciding between a ktm 640.660.690 or a husaberg fs650 e
il only be using it for weekend use mainly and wont be commuting on it,
what i want to know is which one is better and less troublesome,
i dont mind doing maintnance like oil changes and valve checks but if im going to be needing engine rebuilds every 1000 miles or so i could do without it,
i had a ktm 660 before so i know what its like,
what are the service intervals like

the 2 main bikes in my head are the ktm 690 and the fs650?
thank you

the Husabergs fromn 2004-2008 are quite reliable but the KTM is big heavy bike that has no trouble as I understand it. the Husaberg will run rings around it. Husaberg for kicks!

My bro has a 525 it has no low down torque but my 550 is ballsy as evan if i think SM is gay i recommend the Husaberg, not just bias cos i have one evan he wants my bike :)

thanks lads for the replies,
i know the bergs are 500 mile oil changes compared to the ktm being 3000 mile,
that means il be changing oil about twice a month,
is it really worth all that hassle,
i used own a ktm 660 and had great fun on it,
would a berg be an animal compared to the 660?

my bros KTM is not long service intervals, are you comparing an onroad/offroad against dedicated race enduro??? KTM 660 with a LC4 motor at maybe 55HP or a HUS 650 with 65HP???

i know that 690 is about 3000 mile oil changes,
im comparing all on road,
i think the 690 ktm has around the same hp as the 650 berg,

i dont know if the berg is worth the 500 mile oil changes is it?? thats 2 oil changes a month with miles i be doing at the weekends.

thanks

Oil changes are not hard to do i usually change it once a week sometimes more.......

I agree the Husey isn't a commuter bike...

Maybe your just too old taffy?

commuter maybe not but weekend warrior??

It's not just the hp. KTM 690 SMC produces after some minor modifications around 60 rwhp and its dryweight is around 140kg. Husaberg weights fully loaded around 120kg. It makes a difference, but I can understand you if you want something a bit more easygoing, and then it's KTM. Husaberg is more like a bad behaving child that teachers don't like when KTM is that average classroom mate that nobody notices ;)

I know it's not that easy to decide. I had two KTM's before Husaberg (640 LC4 and 625 SMC) and boy they were heavy and lazy machines! Of course they didn't need as much maintenance, but still...

i know its old thread but for the future info
iv had 08 fs650 and 11 690smc
id deff choose the smc again, fs is getting left behind in time , BUT i dont know much about 570 i would love to own one of those as my next bike
if you want a reliable and fierce bike than go for the new lc4 engine

how is the 570 maintenance ?

what maintenance?

we don't do any!

ask algarve off-road. hundreds of hours - never touches them!

I'm digging up old thread again.. I have Supermoto 07 FE550e6 with FS wheels, suspension and 4 pot behringer front brake. I was using this as weekend warrior for last 3 years I had it till recently when my commuter Honda wheels were sent off to be repainted and I had to use Berg to commute to London. 35 miles trip one way, about 6 miles on motorway, rest is city and country lanes, what a machine! On my Honda CB1000R this trip usually takes me about an hour one way, on berg is 45-50 mins max! This is why I am thinking about changing my commuter bike to super moto! Now the problem.. its about 10h on Berg speedo per week so it means weekly oil change and valve clearances every week or two.. I was looking on the new KTM SMC 690R which has 67HP and 140kg.. can someone talk some sense to me, do I want to get that KTM or shall I keep the berg and commute on it? Just wanted to add that I try not to ride when its wet and I would prolly not commute in winter so just warm months till temp does not go below 10C.

My old 640 was good all rounder but was alittle heavy for tight bush, ( lighter than 660, 690, ) motor not in high maintenance side, but still good motor , alittle more comfy side than berg , sigh I'm only little , 50/50 but wat I didn't like is CV carby, going up big hills wif jumps, change carby will fix that.
Berg gr8 performance bike off road 80/20% 50/50%" capable & happy for road or should I say a blast , if u don't mind oils change
Depends wat u & where u be riding wat u want do wif it, ill say 640 & berg close together , 660, 690 are different bike
My 2 1/2 cents every body has differnt views

my vote gets the ktm, less maintenance, easier to ride, the 650 is a high maintenance race bike and won't have the manners of the purposeful ktm road supermoto, this will make the ktm more enjoyable to ride day to day.

The ktm 690 is a great bike and pretty fast to! but I do'nt like how it feels to ride compared to my 570.
At low speed the 690 feels way bigger/heavy'r more boring to ride as the 570 feels like a bycycle compared to it and the way the bike responds to throttle at low speed the 570 feels much more agressive because of the low weight.
But the 690 has better range bigger fuel tank longer service intervals...
Also the stock brakes are better on the berg compared to smc-690r...
I also owned a fs650 but to much between riding that bike and the 690 to compare but I feel like the 570 feels less wild than the 650 (FI) + less nervous steering/more stable.
I think the 570 is easy'r to go fast on altough the 650 feels more intense not a beginner bike;)

+1. Good comparison piece. All the bikes you're considering are good, but for different reasons. Ripping the twisties on the weekend then coming home to crack a beer and do an oil change while bench racing with your buddies? FS650 has the lead.

Twisties with more hwy and commuter duties? FS570. More daily rider and commuter with twisties thrown in on weekends? KTM690.
