Hi guys,

Every year i go for a tour around Europe on my motorbike 2009 Yamaha R1,

after the nice twisty road i bought my Husaberg 650 2002.

after 2 hours it blew up. Ive now nearly fully rebuilt the engine.

High compression piston,
Double valve springs
New rod / bearings
new roler bearings
Upgraded cam chain
FCR 41

So my question is.. I do around 2-3000 Miles on this trip.
If i service my bike every 5 hours or so Will the engine last? I wont be booting it the whole time.

Should i risk it?

Id love to take it. I would hate to sell it to buy a more reliable supermoto (honda XR650 or somthing gay like that)

Many thanks

:)

Anyone???
I have no experience with an 02 650 but I think 5 hours interval is a bit crazy just use GOOD oil and change every 15-20 hours should be fine if it's for a road trip...
The first time after rebuild change the oil sooner but after that...
3000 miles in just one trip seems a bit silly to me on a bike like fs 650 not the most comfy touringbike out there :p but that's just me;)

Hi

Don't have any experience on those journeys, but the berg looks to me more of a bike to have fun on the weekend.
It's not a bike to go to Spain ! :D

There's only one way to find out really :)

IF you do it, then I'd change oil the oil as often as you can, as then you have a feeling for the state of the motor. Ideally check the valves on occasion I guess?

And it's got an SEM stator being an '02, right? Then I'd take good care of it - it's been recommended to spray it with WD-40 and let it dry out after dirt rides (or in wet I'd guess). I'd also get a cush hub or kush sprocket I think. And check the axial play of the crank before you go. These are all things that have been discussed here that I'd guess could help on a long trip like that.

650's were used for long rallys and had a very good reliability record, it's been posted up here. Those were later model bikes though AFAIK

One way to view things is to calculate the cost per ridden km - it's a race-oriented bike after all - and check if it's worth it ... miles = motor hours = wear = maintenance = costs

Thanks for the reply's,

Well id love to take it however waying up all costs id rather have it as a weekend toy. after that mileage id be due another rebuild so ill give it a miss and ill take the R1.

Thanks guys

I've got enough hours/miles on my 05 FS650 that I could have ridden it to Spain and almost back. (from California)

460 hours in and no work on the bottom end.

If it's brand new fresh, oil changes every 5 hours after your 1 hour break-in would be a good idea. Once it's got 20-30 hours on it, 10 hrs would be ok and filter every 3rd or 4th change.

If not hammering it, or using the clutch much, 15 hours would be fine IMO. Could prolly do 20 hour intervals also.

Im sure a filter changed every 1,000 miles would still be in spec. (not clogged at all)

I'd check the valves a few times on your way to 40 hours, then at every 30-40 hours.

FWIW, I have used Rotella T Dino oil 15-45 since 130 hours. It's a reccomended diesel oil with the **JASO MA rating**

**suitable for wet clutches.

Have fun and I think it's a great bike to ride anywhere.
