Husaberg FE 390 vs. KTM 530 EXC

Hello,

I have a 2009 530 EXC that I have put a Rekluse, GPR V2, and a lot of other smaller modifications on. I've been getting started racing doing some New England hare scrambles and one enduro. I'm thinking I would be better served by a smaller bike but I've already dumped a bunch of money into this one and I don't want to lose my shirt on it. I can buy a 2010 FE 390 for around $7000 but I would first need to sell my bike which might not be easy to do this time of year up here. Not really a lot of dirt bikes in this area.

My question is this; for singletrack and new england terrain in general (rocks), would switching to a 390 help me out a lot or not so much? If it would be a night and day difference I might go to the trouble to switch. If it's kind of a toss up I'll stick with what I have for awhile longer. I'm a C rider hoping to be B some day perhaps. 6'3" and 240 lb. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

You're a pretty big guy for a 390, not that you may not love it, but I don't know if it would be that big of an advantage over your current ride. I think the new Husabergs are better than the equivalent KTMs, but I'd be looking at a 450 or 570 if I were you. I am a bit taller than you and only about 10 pounds lighter.

Can you get a ride on one first? That would be the best thing to do.

Well there were any army of Bergs at the National Enduro here last weekend but other than that I don't know anyone anywhere near here that has one. I know the 390 is small for my weight but it still seems like for singletrack, tight woods....we're talking averaging 15 to 20 mph, it would be ok. I could be wrong though, that's why I'm asking. I haven't had anything smaller than this bike since about 11 years ago and I didn't do any of that type of riding at that time. So it's hard for me to know how much the smaller bike would help in those conditions.

Hi there. I'm about 6'2", 230LBS. I ride an FE570, and I wouldn't want any other bike over this bike right now. I ride on the eastern slopes of the rockies in Canada. From your description of where you ride, it sounds similar to where I ride. I ride lots of single track (fairly tight woods, with fallen trees to go over, and plenty of rocks to deal with), also hit some shale faces from time to time. I was worried that this bike would be a handful in the tight stuff, but I soon found out that I had nothing to worry about. This bike, although large in displacement, handles like a much smaller bike in the tight stuff. The low end grunt of this engine is simply phenomenal!! It seems nearly impossible to stall, and somehow always seems to find traction. I was worried that it would tire me out in tighter sections especially, but I was way off. The suspension seems to really work well for this type of riding (don't bother taking this bike to the motocross track), and I feel like I can just keep on riding for longer that ever before. For me, I'm pumped that I went larger, and not smaller. I think if I were quite a bit smaller, I would consider the 390, but for now, I'm absolutely IN LOVE with this 570!!! I recently climbed a very difficult hill on the 'berg, and it pulled 2nd gear all the way to the top. That is remarkable for this hill, as it is very steep, and very technical. I've never climbed it before on any other bike without dropping to first well before getting to the top. These new bergs are simply awesome!

I had a brand new 09 KTM530EXC and one ride on the Berg FE570 and I sold my KTM and bought the 570.

The difference was worth it to me. They say the 570 is easier to ride than the 390 or 450, but not having ridden them I can't vouch for that, but the 570 sure is an easy bike to ride over the 530

Skled, it seems that you want to buy this bike and just trying to justify it! ....You already have been answered in the other forum....so 2011 FEs' might be some choice over 530 ..otherwise ain't worth it!

go for the Berg.. 390 or 450 whats what you should be thinking about, i'm extremly impressed with the power delivery of the 450 easily out performed my 300 exc and i'm quicker on the berg, :D

i am 5"11' and weigh just on 80kg, and i have a 07 550 berg and we ride all terrain but one of my favourites are the very very tight goat tracks mountain bike tracks through dense bush and i still would never sell the big girl for a smaller capacity its so much fun with the big bike, and i am small bloke, you might find the 390 to be bit more busy up and down on the gears keeping it on the boil, but easier to throw around being a bigger bloke.
