Husaberg eats batteries

Hi there!
I'm having some issues with my Husaberg650 04. The bike eats batteries! :? Bet I've replaced the battery 3-4 times in the past 40 ridehours becouse the keep getting discharged and won't recharge again.

I've installed a new battery last week, and went for a ride...worked like a dream for about 1 hour, and the battery died on me again. At home i checked the battery voltage with the engine off, about 12.5V With the engine on idle about 13.5v ...and I rev up the engine abit and got 14.4v ...witch sounds about right?
Even checked if there were someting draining the battery while the engine was off...got nothing.

When the battery dies, turn signals start flashing faster than normal...witch I interpret as excessive voltage?

Anyone got any ideas on what may be causing the problems?

by the sounds of it your bike is cooking the batteries you are getting the right voltage readings for when the bike is running , i have got a funny feeling its your red rec ie your voltage regulator rectifier . which as been updated to a ktm part just been on the phone to someone as dont know your location but in the uk they are £94 as its the same red rec that fits most of them. hope this helps

Maverick,
if you were checking the voltage at the battery terminals, I'd say yes the values you were getting are good.

If your rides are more than a month apart and you're not using a 'battery tender' of some sort, I would expect the battery voltage to be reasonably low before the ride, but probably no less than 10.5V. Are you sure you have no parasitic loss when everything is off? I presume you've measured for any current drain with an ammeter in series with the battery positive?

What type of battery are you using (liquid, glass mat, gel) and what type of charger?

If all this looks to be sensible, I'd start thinking about the possibility of vibration damage. The condition of your dead batteries may give you a clue.

Dminto,
have you been watching too much Coronation Street or something? Red rec? Blimey...

Cheers... P

FWIW, You can also connect the ammeter in series with the negative battery cable and get the same results, one way will show a -0.0 the other way will show 0.0 if there is zero key off draw, just ignore the (-) symbol. i assume all theses bikes should have zero, i know my old berg is 0.0

From your first post, it sounds like it goes dead while riding? If that's the case, then you're not getting charge.

But you said you got 14.4V when revved up, which sounds good - take that measurement again when the engine is good and hot.

Sounds like you have an intermittent problem, maybe stator or regulator.

As mentioned, a 650 will use a lot of juice on starting - never run the battery flat trying "just one more time" to get it to start. If mine doesn't kick off on the first couple tries, I just jump it, then it's good for the rest of the day as long as I run it awhile between starts to charge it back up.

As mentioned, always have a battery tender on when not riding.

And of course, make sure battery connections are solid.
