Thought you may like to know that the £20 cheaper GS alternative to the 7 AMP/HOUR Yuasa doesn't fit into the battery box of the 02 650. On top of that, though it's marketed as the Yuasa equivalent it's actually only a 6AMP/HOUR bat 8O.

So Yuasa it has to be at around £68

Try your local Honda dealer thats where I got mine, the Honda part number is 31500-KGB-901, what you get is a genuine YUASA YTZ7S for £42 and it fits straight in with no mods.

The YTZ7S batteries are 6 amp with cold crank of 130, the original YTX5L-BS is 4 amp with a cold crank of 70.

The bigger battery helps, but the best thing is to have everything set up properly.

Bigger Baps/Bats

Thanks Yoshie I shall enquire and get one.

I've never been keen on big baps, but bigger bats should sure get me started easier eh?! :p

I have got everything set up - it usually starts after 5-6 kicks. I'd like it to start when hot on the electric boot - would make a change you know :)

Hi Guys,
Thanks for this thread a great help! , just bought Rowleys old 02 650FS and started to experience the usual issues with starting !
So Ordered the new battery from local Honda Dealer yesterday lunchtime which was delivered to the dealer AM today, price £41.75.
Fitted the battery along with a new NGK Iridium plug, From what I can see the starting is a definite improvement. Jumped into life from cold as soon as starter button pressed.
Also ran up to temp in the garage and it started on the button from warm.
Will see if this set up gives reliable button starting all the time before investing in the 04 starter motor. :) :)
Left the battery to charge fully on the optimate before going for a good blast.

For the record: Purchased a brand new YTZ7S and charged it with an Opti-Mate. Let it sit for a few days and hit it with the Optimate again. With a pocket tester it measured 13.05 volts fully charged. Still waiting for the correct starter bracket to arrive for the 04 starter mod :?

This battery is listed at 79mm wide as opposed to 71 for the stock battery on a 2002 era FE501. Do they still fit that year of bike okay? I need a new battery and just assume get the YTZ7S if it will fit.

Thanks.

Greg

It will fit no problem. Don't forget the Opti-mate charger and be sure to fully charge it before installing it for the first time. Due to "battery memory" it may never accept a complete charge if this step is overlooked.

I don't think the Battery Tender is a 3 step charger which is apparantly the way to go with the MF sealed batteries. Check out this thread:

just trying to order this battery the honda dealer tells me it has a AT ant the end of the ytz7s? is he talking about the right one? it is a gel battery.

hello every one! sorry to jump in with lots of questions as my first posts on here! just got back from the dealer the part number they say has been up dated and has HE added to the end the battery they had was electrolyte filled (sealed) it was only 6 ah i take it they dont know what they are talking about? they also said gel batteries arent availible in the uk!

found it on their site its the same battery they offered me so its not a gel battery just a factory sealed unit? the other threads on here say its a gel battery. have to find a dealer that will do it for 41 quid mine wants 50 for it.
