Very strange. The high/low switch should make no difference at idle. Even off idle I have found the difference to be not that much.

that's because you have the high idle. the hi/lo isn't causing the high idle!!!!!!!!!

just off idle the hi/lo works and you're in it!!!!!!

suggest you check the slide plate for being upside down or the wrong way around.

Taffy- I've had the exact same issue with my 01 650. Its still running the dellorto carb, however. It idles fine on the 'lo' setting, but putting it to 'hi' causes it to rev up a good bit. It returns to normal once you'ved pushed it back to 'lo'... very odd!

I still have the original factory graph of the ignition timing and it shouldn't make a difference at Idle/tickover what switch setting it's at. OK, I believe you both.

all I can say is: is your static ignition mark on the stator about 1mm to the left of centre of the hole?

other than that well, you could always have it upgraded and the problem sorted at the same time i suppose?

That i don't know, Taffy. Are you talking about how the stator is positioned in its three bolts on the ignition cover? I have my stator lined up so the screws are about dead center in the screw holes. I wasn't sharp enough to note how it was positioned before I took it off and sent you my dead one. [I'm Derek in Kentucky!]

Where are these marks you're talking about? I looked when i reassembled it, but didnt see anything. I'm probably overlooking it.

When it revved up, it revved up like it was going to a higher RPM limit, much like a two-step rev limiter. It jumped right up to the new RPM and held there. When i kicked it back to 'LO', it revved down slowly, kind of how a bike with an air leak slowly comes back down to idle.

I'm on about this deek! you need the static white line in the bottom half of the hole to be to the left of centre as mentioned above. In this photo, one i found in my gallery, the white line is WRONG and is 1mm to the right of centre as you can see.
