On thumper talk, a fellow mentioned that the breather was updated on the 04 models. States that the bikes use less oil with the 04 system and the 04 system can be retrofitted to the older bikes. Anyone familiar with this and what is the difference in the 04 breather?
Thanks Dan

Yes the breather is changed to better handle build up of preassure in the engine. To change your 01-03 to the new system will take a new valvecover and the new breather rubber-tube.

I can see how this can lower oil comsumption some as the preassure on the piston from below will decrease ,and it's there the oil is, but my guess that the this will have a marginal effect on oil consumption.
It will however boost power some and lower the risk of oil leaks because overpreassure in the engine.

Aren't both of those two hose bungs just open to the camshaft galley? Couldn't you just weld an additional bung at the rear of the cover instead of obtaining a new cover, since that part doesn't appear to be sold separate from the head?

Of cource.
Or in that case maybe even better to do it on top of the gearbox to give the preassure the choise of exit and get rid of pulses running through the engine in search of a way out.

On many bikes I would agree, but don't the Berg's need this gearbox pressure to properly regulate oil flow. ie. the reed valve.

Hmm, I can't really see why.
You mean that the gearbox is pressurised on purpose?
Then it has to be totally sealed off from the rest of the engine.
Never thought about that. Is it?
The lubrification system on the Bergs has never been a point of concern for me really, I just see to that all channels are clear and put it together time after time after time without really thinking about that aspect.

Btw, the gearbox is not sealed off. At the kickstarter it's open. And if I'm not wrong there are more holes so there can't be a reason as I see it not to put a breather on top of the gearbox instead of two on top of the valve cover.

boys you're thinking too hard!

you could never bleed off all that crankcase pressure through two outlets quick enough for the reed not to do it's work!!!

even with 10 breather pipes the reed will always 'flutter' in and out!

Taffy

Yeah it will but so what?
What would the difference be if you made a breather in the gearbox?
Not saying I will but if so.

What would make the lubrification of the engine to get worse?
