previos history:

I did a 2 h race in may.
The engine was boiling (traffi jam), and lost many water and also oil from the breather.

After 1,5 h i stoped the race (see thread "alarming noise")

Since this race I didn´t drive the bike.

2 Weeks ago a customer did a test run. bike starts as good as usual.

(Now I´m thinking I heard a little zsss-zss-zsss... noise..)

test drive the road from my house up and down - all ok.

last saturday i loaded the bike on the trailer, and went to a enduro area 400 km away.
with the old 501 and the new550, because i had a customer from this area.

Sunday should be the test run.
And the 501 does nothing!!! not to start!
sometimes a litte backfire in the exhaust.
spark is there.

I think it is the cylinder head gasket.

But outside the gasket I cant see someting wrong.
And no false noise.(fizzling from the compression by a demaged gasket)
Kicks normal, little compression maybe. ( no water in the zylinder i think)
But the new oil is unclear, and I think to high at the inspection glass)
(water in the oil)

has anybody a better tip?
tomorrow I wll demount the zylinder head and take a look...

Fuckfuck ****!!!

I pulled the trailer with 2 bikes 1000 km, and the deal is abortive now!

But my new bike- the 550- is fine

been there armin!

i once used the same head gasket again and it happened. i then used a new headgasket and it still happened! so i skimmed the block but not the spigot by .15mm or as we would say .006" (6 thou). cured.

i also once had the 'O' ring in the sidecover overlap an early sidecover gasket and again lost all the water!

finally, i've nipped a waterpump seal and lost all my coolant that way as well.

take a great deal of care and have another go.

I was wrong.

The auto deco weight was brocken. (take a look in my gallery)
thebroken weight damaged the M5 srew.
all parts were in the zyl head, no further damage.

I changed the weight, setted the valves and the berg started as good as usual.

the water in the oil was a leckage in the cluch cover i think.
I changed the seal ring and the O-ring

I checked the zylinder (head) with compressed air .

No bubbles in the cooler, valves ok, only a little leckage from the piston rings in the crankcase. Feelable by the open oil filler screw.

It´s sort of weird, but why the valve clearance was (as a follow of the broken weight) abruptly to less, and causes the starting problems, is a mistery to me.

Find a explanation!

it looks to me like metal fatigue made the auto decomp weight break. i can't quite see what the little extra 'blob' is? is it from the other end of the shaft?

sometimes when you do the tappets you don't quite have it at TDC. a classic example is when you kick the engine over for TDC and then get on with the tappet check. you always need to have the stator cover off to see the ignition mark at 12 'o clock for piece of mind!

please double check the left cover for any debris behind the clutch assembly etc etc.

The welding point was only for the stop.
you can see it on the big part (weight) on the rigth side under the breaking line.

I think I have found all the parts.

The second part of the screw with the nut was founded too.

I didn´t do the anything with the engine or the valves since the last ride.
I always open check the TDC by flywheel and a screwdriver throug the hole of the sparkplug.

Wow I am glad the piece was not picked up by the cam chain, it could have been really messy (see my own gallery).

Did you modify the auto decomp device at all (blob of weld)? If not, it might be a bad year and metal fatigue.

One more good reason maybe to upgrade it.

Many Katooms use the same exact part. We might want to find out which ones and post on KTMTalk.com and find out if this was just one bad apple.

Good that your bike works again.

This was the KTM EXC part!
The original 2001part was longer, fitts with the alu sproket.
2002 was it updated to steel sproket and fitted decomp-weight.
2004 i changed it to the "better" KTM part - should be the solution for e-starting.
But without success.
Welding point (you can see it on the picture, check the shape on the right side) works,
e-starting was with the dellorto ok.

on my machine i didn't have that little lump that you have? i therefore don't really follow what they did to change it? all i had (because i removed it) was a straight arm that went through the camwheel.

very confusing?????

next time remember - nothing orange is any good! (LOL!)

Taffy, it's the same exact part. Comes to you in an orange box with KTM logo on it, like all the Husaberg-specific parts.

Don't forget that now they're trying to force us to use KTM parts as much as they can.
