how2get link out of swingarm?

Hello

...and another question from the german greenhorn :) :

I want to unmount everything of the swingarm to grease the bearings... unmounting was not a big problem except the "vertical link" (see picture). Firstly it was an exercise of an hour or something to get the screw/bolt out of the link/swingarm...

My Question :
Now, how do I get the link out of the swingarm ? Just pulling ? Seems like there's still something that holds the link in the swingarm...

2nd Quest :
How do I service the bearings of the swingarm best ? Getting the bearings out or service them inside the swingarm ? How to clean ?

I am pretty sure that there is a bolt holding that cam onto the swingarm. If you remove this, it should be rather straightforward to pull the thing out. You might need a rubber mallet, though.

As for the bearings, replace them. I am a firm believer that bearings are not servicable, they are replacable. Those bearings are most likely needle bearings. If you remove them, there should be markings/letters on the end face that will indicate the part number. Most likely going to be SKF's, which you should have available in Germany.

I have not done this to my bike yet. So, I cannot verify nor provide bearing part numbers for this area of the bike.

You will need a press to remove the bearings. Sometimes a torch is needed too. You might even be able to get away with putting the parts in an oven at 300deg. F (not deg C!!!) to get the metal to expand enough for the bearings to slide out easily.

Good luck.

PS - If it is an SKF needle bearing, the number on the face will look something like this: HK3012, I am pretty sure the HK prefix denotes needle bearings.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thx!

Ahem... how do you mean removing the bolt with a mallet ? The problem is you can not put on a mandrel+mallet... the swingarm only has a hole on one side (right side on the picture).
Or do you mean I should put the mandrel straight in that hole and hammer the bolt to the left side ?

>replacing bearings
Argh, I think I'll not replace the bearings as I can't see any clearance... they are used only 10-20 hours ! I just wanted to replace the grease in it because the bike is 6 years old and the bearings of the tires were worn out (I thought it would be the same with the other bearings)...

Timo

by the way : is it my browser or has the webmaster change to spanish ? :)

Hey Timo -

The steel bushings are pressed up against the link. Just knock the link side-to-side and few times. This will force the bushings back into the swingarm, releasing the link. You will then be able to remove it.

Hi Timo.

I had the same problem you has a couple of months ago. I couldn't get that bolt out, so I just regreased the other bearings.

Don't remove the needle bearings, just use your finger to regrease them.

thanks !

thx to all!

I'll do that, fingerin' the bearings with molybdenum sulohide grease... and leave it as it is when I can't get the bolt out...

Timo

The bolt will come out. I eventually got mine out by progressively placing spacers, nuts , washers etc over the bolt end and levering with tyre levers and the like with a little hammering. The link itself is tight within the swingarm and also needs a little 'percussive' persuasion. They say patience is a virtue. Worth doing because once you get it all lubed up properly it comes out easier each time.

hae ?

Hi again

I have to admitt that I can't figure out to unmount the link :(

What I tried is to take a threaded rod with a dowel pin (or is it called peg ?anyway it's the (1) on the picture) and wegded it into the sleeve. Then by rotating the nut (2), the threaded rod comes out in the direction shown on the picture... so far so good, but it didn't work, the dowel pin just glided out of the sleeve :(

So note that the bolt (original Husaberg screw) is already out of the link as shown on the picture... so I'm talking of the sleeve at position (1) not of a bolt ;)

Anyway, WHAT THE HACK can I do to get the sleeve (and afterwards the link) out ?

Regards,
Timo

Your problem might be that you are trying to remove the bushes. If you've got the bolt out, then the link will come out out, as long as none of the 3 bushes bridge a gap between the link and the swingarm. Mine was tough to pull out, but levers and cold chisels did it. I did tidy up the surfaces afterwards to make it easier to reinstall and remove later.

What do you mean with cold chisels ? How did you apply a chisel on the link ??
Did you put the leever between link and swingarm to pull the link out ?

Yes, you're probably right with the bushes (bushes = the sleeve between the bolt and the bearing ?) building a gap... but what can I do now ?

Timo

Yep, between the link and the swingarm to separate the two. It did seem to be an interference fit. Ken's suggestion to tap the link sideways a bit might help, but in my case that wouldn't have helped. As long as the bushes don't bridge the gap between the swingarm and link it will come out.
